Frowned upon but not forbidden

Post by SavySallySupersedes »

What is something your parents didn't want you to do, but wasn't necessarily forbidden?

For me, it was going to the movie theaters. My parents bought me a car before I ever saw a movie inside a theater. I still don't know why going to the movie theaters was so bad. My mom would say: "It's dark. Ciyaal suuq go there. It's not a place for a good girl like you."

Little does she know...

Just kidding.

 My mom would freak when I'd go to the movies too. Even today if I go, she'll say "subxaan, ado intaas le'eg? Na hoy ciyaal suuqnimada jooji, guur meer baa tahaye" Wasn't really an inconvenience since I hardly watch movies in or outside the theatres. I prolly reach the theatres once or twice a year.

I wanted to get a nose ring as a teen and hooyo freaked  Looking back, I'm sort of glad I didn't get one, because now it seems like everyone has one. She could never give me an adequate reason as to why though. I guess you could argue it is xaram though *shrugs*.

Oh, the nose ring was no-go in my house. I wouldn't dare bring that up. I couldn't go to Hope Brown Johnson's sleepover in the 3rd grade. My mom was like: "I'm afraid that you might get molested. We don't trust white people." :o Mom's candidness.

It isn't. I don't know where I picked it from but I view people with piercings (other than the ears) poorly. Even those with extra piercings in their ears. Your mother is right.

Subeer: That was for your own benefit. Birds of a feather flock together.

Climi: I'd like to know :)

SSS: LOL Wallahi that was the same reason why I wasn't allowed to go to sleep overs :wtf: "Gaaladan/carabtan ma taqaanid, wey ku fuuli hadday raban". When I was older, it turned into "haa, sheekooyinka gamba yarta waan aqaana. Waxaad odhan doonta halkaas ayaan jooga laakin club baa dhex taagan tahay. Ma shalay ayaan dhashay nayaahee?" :snoop:

Insomniac:  I know Somali moms w/ nose rings. It's nothing really. My fam is just too conservative.

^ I figured loose girls went to theatres back in the mother land. There's no other explanation for their level of paranoia.

That's the same excuse she uses when I bust open the album and point at pics of hers in 'toob al amarikana' & pencil skirts :snoop: Somali parents, you gotta love them.
