Al-Shabaab intermediates two fighting clans in Lower Shabelle



Mogadishu (Harar24) – Two months of tribal fighting seem to be coming to an end after the two warring factions came to an agreement at a reconciliatory meeting hosted by the Islamist movement Al-Shabaab.

The fighting started when militias within the governmental troops started fighting each other in the Lower Shabelle region, each tribe came to the aid of their fellow tribesmen within the militia, thus leading the fighting to a full blown conflict between the two tribes.

The fighting which mainly took place around Janale, Marka and the “KM-50” area claimed an estimate of seventy lives and lead to the displacement of hundreds of people.

Yesterday however, both tribes were invited by Al-Shabaab to reconciliate and to put an end to the bloodshed. Around seventy clan elders and leaders from both sides attended the meeting in the city of Bulomarer in the Lower Shabelle region. Present at the meeting were Al-Shabaab leaders, including Al-Shabaab’s regional leader Mohamed Abu Abdullah and other religious leaders.

After much talk and effort an agreement was reached by both factions to put their fighting aside and to restrain those within their tribes who wish to stir up fighting again.

Al-Shabaab boasts of having solved many similar incidents in the past, where they reconciliated conflicting tribes who often may have been at odds for decades.
