Somalia reappears at Inter Parliament Union.

A Somali delegate is participating in the International Parliament Union meeting which officially opened in Switzerland on Monday. Law maker Abdullahi Ahmed Hussein is representing Somalia in the global conference.
Somalia’s attendance at the International parliament conference is the first since the country regained its Inter parliament membership recently after 40 years of absence from the global platform.

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has officially opened the conference before the IPU Secretary General Mr. Andenrs Jonson takes over the conference leadership on Monday.

Somalia’s representative Mr. Abdullahi Ahmed Hussein held separate meetings with some of the world delegates at conference discussing with them on the current situation of Somalia and the role that their governments can play in the process of restoration of peace and stability in Somalia.

“I met with delegates from Djibouti, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates and the Pan Arab parliament” the lawmaker said adding that all talks ended in smooth manner.

The international delegates at the conference are scheduled to elect Inter Parliament’s next secretary General on Thursday this week. Somalia will be voting at the election some 40 years after it regained its IPU membership.

Somali farmers improve domestic food production

For a long period of time the food crisis in Somalia has been a major concern in a country that possesses huge fields of rich agricultural land. Now the UN World Food program has decided to start up a plan that aims to empower Somali farmers.
Now for the first time ever, Somali farmers are able sell 2-hunred tons of high quality maize grain to WFP. The amount will be used to supply areas that are deprived of enough food. Musa is a farmer from Afgooye. He says they have the capacity for massive production but they need support to market their product on an extensive level. Somalia’s Agriculture Minister says the revamping of the agriculture sector is a significant step aimed at reviving an economy strained by two decades of civil war.The new program can be a major breakthrough for the farmers of a country that was faced with severe famine less than three years ago. The initiative by the UN World Food Program that plans to buy grains from Somali farmers is meant to show the Somalis that they can be self-reliant and do away with food aids. Experts say Somalia owns rich agricultural lands that can produce high-quality food and fruits, with oranges such as this one exported from as far as the Persian Gulf countries.

Somali government forces and AMISOM have liberated Qoryooley
Mogadishu (HOL) - As Somali government force backed by African Union troops have intensified military operations across south-central Somali regions capturing another important town in the lower shabelle region on Saturday.
The Allied forces launched an offensive on the town from two directions early on Saturday morning and finally seized it after engaging in fierce fighting with the militants.

According to residents the fighting lasted about an hour before the Al-Qaeda-proxy militants were ousted of the town.

Qoryooley is the 7th major town that falls into the hands of Somali government forces for the past several weeks as a result of the intensifying combat operations against Al Shabab militants in the country.

“The town seems to have completely fallen into the hands of Somali government forces and the African Union peacekeepers” a resident who demanded anonymity told the media.

The forces are now conducting house-to-house search operations trying to tighten their grip on the town.

Somali Republic ratifies three core International Labour Organization conventions

Image
Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, today addressed the International Labour Organization (ILO) Governing Body followed by signing the ratification of three core ILO Conventions and joining of the Decent Work Program at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Prime Minister on behalf of the Federal Republic of Somalia ratified: the Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise Convention; Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining Convention and ratified against the Worst Forms of Child Labour.

Somalia’s engagement in the Decent Work program which aims to grow sustainable jobs, with a specific focus on the youth, as well as protect the fundamental rights of the worker.

Addressing the ILO Governing Body, the Prime Minister, Said:

“Somalia has vast natural and untapped resources, however, the poorly diversified economy, underdeveloped infrastructure, weak education system, lack of markets and weak capacity to manage these resources in a sustainable way, leave the economy’s full potential still untapped.

“Large numbers of unemployed youths are a potential source of insecurity given their vulnerability to recruitment into criminal and violent activities by terrorist groups.

“While we engage in military operations we must continue to address the main challenges which allowed the collapse of the state, ultimately allowing Al-Shabaab to rise. We must make efforts to:

* Harmonise our traditional setting
* Ensure fair access to resources and fully inclusive political engagement
* Implement sustainable Somali owned state building process for peace
* Institutionalisation of protection and promotion of Human Rights in harmony with the Paris principles
* Integration of the Post Transition Human Rights Road Map, New Deal Compact, National Stabilisation Plan and Decent Work Program

“Job creation is a key part of our stabilisation plans as we must prove to the people that there is a peace dividend now that Al-Shabaab has been driven out. Investing in job creation is much more productive, sustainable and cost effective than peace-making, peacekeeping or any other conventional military operations.”

The Director General of the ILO, Guy Ryder, hosted a working lunch for the visiting Prime Minister and his delegation where they discussed the importance of concerted multilateral and bilateral co-operation.

Following the working lunch the Prime Minister met with the Geneva’s Friends of Somalia chaired by the UK Ambassador to UN Missions (Geneva) Karen Pierce, which is a unique cross-regional member states group within the UN system in Geneva, briefing them on the current developments in Somalia and on-going operations against Al-Shabaab.

The State representatives reconfirmed their support for Somalia’s on-going stabilisation and welcomed the Prime Minister’s vision of self-reliance.
