Modern Somali music: a summary

Post by hydrogen »

I've noticed there are interesting dynamics which exist in modern Somali music. There are cliques of musicians which dominate certain fields and are very distinct and distinguishable from the rest. I will list how I perceive the artists and summarize them.

North American Superstars

This group is very confident about the music they make and collaborate with each other to garner as many views as possible, thanks to a mobilization of the most subscribed to Somali music channels based in the US. This group dominate in Minneapolis and perform at weddings all across America but often go back/sing for their tribal homelands. They don't hesitate to get hundreds of thousands of views and set trends. The likes of Hodan Abdirahman, Rahma Rose and Farxiya Kabayare, Dalmar Yare are at the forefront of this group.

The Hargeisa crew

This groups runs the show entirely from Hargeisa, releasing innovative songs that move and compel any listener. They enjoy some celebrity status thanks to being on channels like HCTV in the autonomous region of Somaliland. They don't really collaborate with foreign signers but foreign singers collaborate with them so there exists some level of exclusivity among them and they are a tight group of musicians who are very influential in Somali music globally. Songs like "Ha i raadsan" courtesy of Mursal Muuse spread like wildfire in the international Somali music scene. This field is pioneered by likes of Khadra Silimo, Asma Love, Mursal Muuse, Mohamed BK.

UK singers

This group of singers are a group in the lightest sense of the word, they don't collaborate with each other often but that is not a concern of theirs as they reign in the Somali music world without much turbulence. This is perhaps the only field where the entrance into the industry isn't rigorous but the expectations are high as they perform all over Europe at events of all kind. Expect their music to be new and exciting. This group revolves around singers like Jooqle, Abdirisaaq Gaadaco, Xaawo Kiin and Hani UK.

Once Nairobi

Although this group may live in different places in the world, they still feel like Nairobi in their hearts and their music seems influenced by this past of theirs. This is a very diverse group who collaborate with each other and other singers. It is usually singers Falis Abdi, Shukri Sindiko, Ilkacase Qays who are distinct in this sense.

I will continue with the rest of summary in the next part.
