Yusuf Al Kownayn was Somali

Post by Caesar »

Salaam snetters

I will be talking about one of the famous sheikhs in Somalia
His name is Yusuf Al Kownayn, some of are you asking (wasn't he an arab) but no, he was an Ethnic Somali from Zaylac ( the capital of the Awdal sultanate twin city of harar, centre of Islamic knowledge) If you ask anyone in Awdal about Yusuf Al kownyan you will
get his life story within 2 seconds

Anyways, why the name Kownyan? It was his nickname, "universal" due to the fact he spoke many languages, (arabic, somali, canfaari to name a few) He also studied in Iraq (Busra) that is where he first got the kownayn nickname. He returned back to Awdal afterwards, this is where uneducated somalis from outside Awdal confuse history, he merely came back from Iraq after completeing his studies, and was asked to convert the jahiil into islam ( pagan somali tribes)
He didn't come back "arab".That's impossible.

He came back to Somalia and , converted the Idoor population to Islam, along (with shiekh Isaaq), Yusuf al kownayn was the one to kill Bucur Bacayr,
This is the Zaylac tradition and therefore fact. References will be provided once I have everything in order. But like I said, this is the truth, come refute come debate the thread is open :P Yusuf Al Kownayn was a Dir man. Yes I said it and it's true, his real abtirsi coming soon, none of that made up bullshit. We have a reer Zaylici here to provide the truth
Also Aw Barkhaadle is a different man ( ALSO SOMALI!)
Somalis get simple things confused.
Im going to blow up the history section on snet believe me!

But remember Somalis, the oldest masjid outside Arabia is in ZAYLAC (Awdal Region)
Do you think we could not produce at least one indigenous Shiekh to spread the deen? (There was one who went to yemen...but alas another thread :P )
THINK IT AIN'T ILLEGAL YET

Just Cerulli, who isn't the best source. There's a copy of it in "saints and somalis" by I. M. Lewis (who is an even worse source) but it's the only source I have so there it is.

Yusuf al-Kownayn is possibly the most confused with person in Somali history. He is variously confused with and conflated with:

Xasan Kaweyni, the Reerow Xasan ancestor
Yusuf Barkanti, of Muddan Muqabul Ogaden
Aw Barkhadle, the southern saint

To those outside of awdal they get confused easily, many like to claim famous people.

im talking about the Yusuf Al Kownyan ( remember al kownayn is just a nick name when he went to iraq) that was from zaylac.

Yusuf al-Kawnayn was known as "Aw Barkhadle", but the Aw Barkhadle the southern Somalis venerate was probably Xasan Kaweyni. I don't think Yusuf al-Kawnayn ever travelled to the south.
