I was once asked by a friend to sponsor her husbands brother. I replied, only if you pay me 20K up front. In Canada, when you sponsor someone you are financial responsible for that person for the first two years. Any welfare they may apply for will later be charged to you. If the person runs off and applies for it, you are screwed.
