The situation in 1949 was utterly different. The UN partition would have created two separate states, but this was rejected. Since then Israel has conquered the land it holds, including that now occupied by Palestinians. Without a peace treaty, which amounts essentially to recognition for the state of Israel, the Palestinians are lucky to have Bantustans. If Israel were Nazi Germany, the Palestinians would either be worked to death in Israeli factories or simply rounded up and eliminated. It's the Palestinians themselves that have frittered away the Palestinian state, which may now very well not be achievable as a viable entity.

The Palestinians have been wanting 1967 borders for a while now.
