The importance of wearing makeup
Today I was at a meeting and I was on the client side. So this company was pulling out all the stops and I was enjoying watching all the politics and power play because none of it had anything to do with me but by association they were trying to impress me too.
Now what I noticed was that the woman with the most amount of experience had the least amount of progression. She had all this experience with my company because she'd stayed in the same role for 10 years. So I'm just watching the dynamic trying to identify the cause/find an explanation.
First thing I noticed she's overweight. So I thought okay does that make a difference? There's of course the experience her now manager had when she joined but surely 10 blooming years! That has to count for something. Then after a while their boss comes in and she's overweight so I thought okay that hypothesis is gone. Then I started to look at the difference and whereas one looked like she spent a bit of time on her appearance the other had a very obviously beautiful personality with no makeup and old clothes. You can guess which is the boss.
I realised looking across the room that given a confrontation she looked like the least likely to push back.
So this has me wondering; if you were to write a formula for success in the corporate world do you have any hope of making it to the top without looking like a shark?
Building on this I've always wondered why people, teachers assumed that I was leadership material. I'mnot nuug-ing myself or knocking myself either but it always seemed random and baseless because they didn't know me that well or have evidence in a lot of cases. I wondered if it was because I'm tall or because I have one of those arrogant looking noses. After today I think it's about looking like if pushed you'd shove back.
And when it comes to being a shark, appearance goes a long way. Bond or Batman, Armani or tights, looking put together is imperative to your success.

It's always easier when you write without thinking about it a lot. This might help...express out loud what you would write, then stop and jot that sentence down. After you've completed everything, edit it. It's how I used to write essays. Worked for me.Jasmine6 wrote:Also smh at writing that in a few minutes and taking 2 weeks to write 900 words
900 words Jas...that's like a page and a quarter

So who's the boss and what do you mean by a shark

Re: The importance of wearing makeup
I read an article a while back that said people associate being fit and healthy looking with intelligence. Also apparently on average taller men have higher paying jobs and better looking wives. So you can't discount vanity and a whole lot of being judged by your cover.
Looking like you could keep the ship afloat is just as important as actually being able to do it. If you don't look like you could, you probably will not get the promotion.

Re: The importance of wearing makeup
I've read research stating that women who wore makeup to work were more likely to get promoted. I might not have access to the journal but I'll try to find the article. Also, there's a correlation between attractiveness (both genders), height (men) and higher earning potential.

Maybe the fat lady without the make up didn't want to move up? Not everyone wants to move up. .

If you know what you want, work ur butt off for it and aim to keep getting promoted-you will get what you want, regardless of how short your skirt is. In my opinion many somalis are happy at working at 60 percent of their potential.

Re: The importance of wearing makeup
I've seen companies who didn't want to hire over weight women. I am not even making this up. I've set up interviews for overweight women, they had the experience, knowledge and degrees but once the company saw them for the interview, we get a call back saying the company is no longer looking for any applicants.. But after few hours I get another call from the same company looking for employees.
My point is, its mostly overweight women who're rejected or doesn't get promoted at a job. We live in a shallow world.

Myself and a guy got our first sale at an intern place. The boss was happy for us.when it came for the time to visit the client he took two lovely girls with him and told us to chill at the office .Julkimi wrote:I've seen companies who didn't want to hire over weight women. Julkimi: that's sad for those women. You'd think the company wants to hire a workforce, not decoration?
Jasmin: Somalidu waxay ku maahmaahdaa, labiskaagu wuu kula shaqo doonta (or tagaa). I'm not going to lie, I don't put a huge effort into my work outfits & looks, I keep it professional; so long as the clothes follow a colour scheme, they're clean & ironed, and I've got the obligatory indho kuul on my eyes, I'm done. What's the point on putting extra effort where it looks contrived/OTT/attention-seeking... ma aroos ban ku socdaa?
Obviously if I was doing corporate or private sector work, or heck, even mostly working with adults! Yeah, then I would put more consideration into my dress.
Your point about "if you're provoked, would you push back?" I think this is to do with confidence, and from there, happiness. The person needs to have an active social life, major life commitments other than work (to ground them, and so they know work ain't all it) and appreciate their self-worth.

Re: The importance of wearing makeup

People who are not dressed well usually are not serious about what it is they are doing.

Re: The importance of wearing makeup
Possibly but it seems impossible to believe that anyone would be happy with someone who joined the team X years after them going on to progress to be their boss. It's mind boggling.Perfect_Order wrote:Maybe the fat lady without the make up didn't want to move up? Not everyone wants to move up. .

If you're going to work dressed like it's an aroos then there's something not quite right there

I think "smart" especially for women can mean a lot of things. From flowery, flowy tops + smart trouser and semi formal footwear combo to a tight fitting sleeveless formal dress + killer office shoes combo and the skirt/trouser suit that is more formal than smart and then anywhere in between these extremes
How you dress will make a difference imo. Whether or not you get to head of department or headmistress, whether or not you're put more in front of parents or clients in general. How you dress will create an impression on people and it will ultimately sway the direction of your professional development/progression
We as human beings are a lot more vain than we would willingly admit.
