Actually, suicide is common. I have relatives and people that I know who committed it in the diaspora and in Africa. The underlying cause is mental diseases, the main one being depression while bipolar, schizophrenia etc are also common.

What is new is the diagnosis. Mental patients back home in the old days died of other diseases because society shunned them (they died on the streets of other causes) or died of other causes in their homes.

Depression and other mental diseases are killing our people. There are reported cases in the USA of parents murdering their kids, women murdered by their spouses without rational explanations. When I was in Oslo awhile back, there was this somali dude went amok on a commuter train with a sharp knife. He attacked indiscriminately and injured 7 passengers

Change of habitat, the civil war, qaad and other factors have certainly contributed to the prevalance but it the diagnosis; Cancer and liver diseases are the number one killers in the diaspora; does that mean that cancer/liver cases are on the rise? No.

Why not? the more kids the higher the propensity to have a generous retirement scheme; insurance policy. In addition, chances are that all of the 13 kids will not see adult life.

But, there is no rational reason why diaspora somalis should have more than 2 kids.

Didn't get a chance to listen to the audio, but I am assuming he was dealing with some form of depression.Very sad!
