Lower Life Expectancy + High Birth-rate = Good?

Post by LiquidHYDROGEN »

I was reading this article and thought that if higher life-expectancy and low birth-rates are so expensive to an economy and detrimental to popualtion growth, then in an ideal Somalia with proper health-care and maturnity facilities, we should be bumping off our cajuus and cajuusads.

High birth rates are usually associated with third world countries. Citizens are not smart, rich, and educated. They are also more religious or conservative than they would have been in 1st western world. IN Somalia for instance, high rates of birth, equals to insurance for being taking cared of in your age by your own children. :stylin:

Haha, I don't think we'll ever have the same issues as the Kpop guys. We somalis are very fruitful in the reproductive department.

Well with better standards of living and healthcare the Somali life expectancy will be high, so its good in one sense.
I suppose just like with everything else there are advantages and disadvantages and you need to look for a middle ground; East Asian countries have historically been obsessed with slowing population and industrializing and they never anticipated this.
A poor country despite all the disadvantages among them being low life expectancy, it will have at least a natural population growth, and having a high population means a country being more dominant and powerful in regional and international level. For example this is good for Somalia because it has Ethiopia as a neighbour. Somalia already experiences low increase because pastoralism and high infant mortality, an increase in living standards will only slow it down further. This is why i think this country needs to have a different path in developing.
South Korea is an extreme example though, most developed countries are just below the replacement level, France for example experiences natural population increase despite the fact its has all the hallmarks of a developed country. Government could give incentives, a program where families are giving subsidies and other benefits to keep the families financially secure. This can only happen in developed and upper-mid income countries, Russia for instance reversed its natural decrease through this method.
2750 is a long time away, i wouldnt worry about, will humans be even around by then? lol.

No. It is not good. It is a lethal combination and what is keeping Africa behind.

We have scarce resources. We have also technology that can substitute labour. High fertility means more mouths to feed- costs more.

Lower life expectancy = cost increase. Think it this way; pregnancy= healthcare costs childbirth=costs schooling=costs ; death before peak= only costs.

So basically high birth rate=costs
Lower life expectancy= costs.

That is the problem with Somalia. High birth rates should be matched by an increase in production/output.

Granted high fertility= high mortality = lower life expectancy ....

Somalia is actually the perfect population size -10 million. Any lower and country becomes insignificant. Anything over 20 million and it becomes politically and economically lethargic like a lot of big western nations.

At the moment though, high fertility/birthrates is what is keeping somalis from being extinct. The country has a very high mortality rate don't forget.

Also if high birthrates are bad, why are western and east asian countries struggling with a shortage in the workforce and huge healthcare costs due to elderly. Stop drinking neo-liberal koolaid.
