" Mr Howarth-Lees told The Telegraph that he had been contacted by the head of the Mutawa, who had ordered an investigation.

“We don’t have to fight the case because they have already admitted their people are at fault,” he said. “It will be left up to us as to how we play it.”

He said he did not blame the government or the system in Saudi Arabia, where he was “proud to live”. “This sort of thing happens to people but it is quite isolated,” he said. “There are rogue elements in police forces everywhere, including the United States and Britain too.”
