I got this email...

I was wondering if you would be able to help me with a project I have been working on with a friend and colleague, Mohamed Dione, surrounding the topic of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/FGC).

We plan to create a documentary to increase the dialogue about this cultural practice between those who have direct experience with the procedure and those who are not familiar with (or at risk) FGM/FGC. We want to their to be a global conversation so that people of all ages in the more developed world (i.e. the U.S, Canada, Europe) understand that they have as much influence over the elimination of this practice as those in countries with high prevalence rates.

The project is still very much in the work. We are currently looking for women and girls to interview (preferably from Guinea, Egypt, Senegal, and Somalia) who have undergone the procedure or know a female in their family who have been circumcised. Someone who is willing to share their story or at least talk about their feelings toward the practice.

Here is the information:

Caramel Cappuccino Films is developing a Documentary on FGM (Female Genital Mutilation/Female Circumcision) and its effects on girls and women. We are currently seeking women and girls who have had any and all forms of female circumcision who would like to share their stories. We are currently looking for girls/women who live in the United States but all interested women are encouraged to contact us. Arghhh. FGM is so 2006. Nobody talks about that anymore. They need to come up with another topic. That topic has been used and abused.

They want Somali women and girls to record and parade in front of Western audiences to fit their preconceived, contrived and self serving narratives. If they really want to make a difference they can support and engage with the locals in the countries mentioned.

^ The originators of this project just want their 5 mins in the limelight on the back of the suffering of others. After they've held a few screenings, got their names out there in the media, they'll move on to their next projects. Its all a bit perverse.

The most interesting thing about our females to the west is if they were cut or not. If they weren't born here they were cut but so what. You don't need to educate the west about it because no girl born here and raised here goes through it, tell them to go to Africa if they really care. A white liberal woman crying for an hour because of a screening won't change anything, and then the way they will look at every Somali girl they see with their knowing eyes and "you are so strong".

We need to stop educating the west, thinking they are the civilized saviors. So annoying.

They need to make all them ayeeyos that cut up girls for a living QUIT then fgm will stop

make them ayeeyos pick rice from a river or something

you have to give them new jobs so they dont die.

and have a strong government to change local cultures, say no to fgm.

Irrelevant, at the end of the day it will be mainly presented to cadaan women. These video projects don't work on Africans.
