I wouldn't say religion is regressive. Religion is a good thing if applied properly and you actullay are a good Muslim at heart. I'm not one to judge others faith but how the fck do zoomalis back home all get up 5:30am to go the masjid, pray every salat on time, follow the religion in a almost orthodox manner but yet still kill each other and discriminate others based on their qabil. How are they still the most vile and corrupt Africans. How are we the most divided African nation even though we are all one ethnicity, unlike other African countries where there are multiple different ethnicities. Obviously we need to move from a theocratic society to a more secular one. These f-king zoomalis clearly aren't takin Islam seriously, their just xoolo who follow it blindly. Isn't Islam supposed to be the religion of peace.

Somalis have been praying in taraweehs and jumcas for freaking years and years, but yet not an ounce of improvement in our conditions. Does god hate us? Why he no accept our duas?

With that being said, atheists and agnostics are a sizable group. I would suggest about 15% of Somalis are atheist/agnostic. Another 25% are Muslim by name and are open minded. We will need these people in order for us to push certain things: the end of clannism and clan wars, the end of religious extremism, the end of child marriages, gay marriage, gender equality, an end to discrimination against non ethnic Somalis and minority clans

I would say because of culture, rather than religion. I feel that Muslims can be successful given the right conditions. Muslims in the former Soviet Republics are doing well. Indonesia and Malaysia are doing well compared to the middle east. So maybe the issue is culture, no?

I respect people's belief systems, and I will fight for their rights to do so, but Somalis tend to shun Somali Atheists. Im open about it publically, and i speak up cos I want others who are afraid to also speak up.

We, as Somalis, need to advocate for critical thinking, questioning authority, progressive ideas, religious freedom etc. but we have a very regressive culture, and on top of that a very regressive religion.

even arabs aren't as religious as Somalis. I think being religious has a lot to do with poverty and other shit like that.

in my opinion the only way islam will survive in the Somali community is by birth rates. Number of Somalis losing faith is increasing rapidly. especially in the youth below 30. I predict a big change in the religious demographics of Somalis very soon. Expect to see more Somalis claiming non religion soon.
