Ras kamboni suffered heavy casualities on Kudha island
MOGADISHU — Somalia`s al-Qaeda-affiliated Shebab rebels on Saturday launched a major offensive against a strategic island in the south of the country, causing heavy casualties, witnesses said.
The militants fought fierce battles on Kudha island, situated in the autonomous Lower Juba region and around 70 kilometres (40 miles) southwest of the port city of Kismayo.
Security sources said the attack by the rebels appeared to be their largest conventional assault since their leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane, was killed in a US air strike in September.
"There was heavy fighting inside Kudha village. Al-Shebab fighters entered from two directions and pushed out the local forces," Adan Isa, a local elder, told AFP by telephone.
Another elder, Abdirahman Mohamed, said there were "dead bodies strewn in the streets" after the clashes with Jubaland forces, and that the rebels appeared to have pushed out the local forces.
Several Somali media reports also said the rebels were now in control of Kudha island -- which has changed hands several times in recent months -- and that up to 70 fighters had been killed.
Jubaland military officials in Kismayo, however, denied that the island had fallen.
Local forces, backed by Kenyan troops fighting with the African Union AMISOM force, were reported to have seized the island just over a week ago.
The island has been described as a key staging post of illegal charcoal exports, a key source of revenue for the Shebab.

Alshabaab is dead, they can carry out random attacks and assasinations but soon they will be eliminated. They are not in control of any major city in Somalia. Attacking unimportant rural villages like Kudhaa shows only their weakness, why can't they attack, Jowhar, Balad, Baladwayn, Kismaayo, Barawe, Marka, Ceeblbuur and other major towns if they are strong engough? Alshabaab might was almost destroyed.

They are weakened but there is a lot of people who benefits from the war on alshabab and wish the status quo to remain so they will not be fully defeated. This opens the door for a comeback mechanism for them.

Alshabaab can't confront Somali National Armay (SNA), they don't even have balls to carry out major attacks in the towns controlled by the SNA instead they like to attack the towns that are under control of the tribal millitias like Raskamboni millitia. They run with out firing single bullet when they hear that SNA are approaching.

No sxb. Other tribal militias like Ahlu Sunnah defeated Al-shabaab in their home turf on their own. Ras kambonis are weak as fuck, because of majority of their soldiers are young inexperienced refugee men recruited from Dadaab and Kakuma camps. That's why al-shabaab are causing heavy damage on them and retaking land. They not only lost Kudhaa but Cabdalla Biroole which is located just 30 km west of Kismayo even with KDF air support. These guys can never liberate whole Lower Jubba let alone other regions.dayax123 wrote:Alshabaab can't confront Somali National Armay (SNA), they don't even have balls to carry out major attacks in the towns controlled by the SNA instead they like to attack the towns that are under control of the tribal millitias like Raskamboni millitia. ps. Kudhaa is Gaaljecel/ Shiiqaal/Bajuni area.
