LooL the irony in all this is, half the stuff at Dulles, Reagan and Minneapolis St Paul International airport are Ethiopians. And it's spiffy clean...u can literally eat off the floor. It's that clean.

Saaxib; Africa has relatively been doing good. Economic growth has been in double digits for the last two decades or so in many countries. Yes, granted some of these growth is not that big in absolute terms but generally the continent has been doing well. Ethiopia in particular has been doing exceptionally well.Estarix wrote:Africa's biggest problems was the lack of modern state geared economic developed and the lack of national conciousness development of any kind pre colonialism. Today in most African countries these problems have been reduced.Ethiopia although has had some level of national conciousness mostly restricted to some of the highlanders; most of Ethiopia was in essence a colony itself under occupation no different from most sub saharan countries sxb. So i dont buy into that. I dont see why Ethiopia should be put on a higher pedestal.

The problems are huge; we lack institutions , or those that we have are weak. There is also population growth that is not matched by economic growth.
As I said, Ethiopia is the gateway to Africa; it cannot blame colonialism (boy, I can write essays on the impact of colonialism on Africa) and besides why build a big airport when you cannot build and maintain toilets?
Thanks for describing the L.

Re: The shame of a continent!!!
Truth. Thing is, most parts of what is Ethiopia was and is still colonized. Europeans first, now the Amhara/Tigray. Can't believe why it's protected by external forces when any media exposure would make people realize it's basically a effective colonial entity.Estarix wrote:Africa's biggest problems was the lack of modern state geared economic development and the non existant national conciousness of any kind pre colonialism. So colonialism only applies when white people do it?... i understand your well versed in the history of NFD in Kenya, would you not describe the state of the people there for the past 50 yrs something akin to colonialism. The Somalis and Oromos (basically a plurality of pop of Ethiopia) have been under worse conditions.Lamagoodle wrote:Saaxib; Africa has relatively been doing good. Like i said before the root of the problem though (if we ignore colonialism) lies with the history and culture. And the two are inseparable.

Re: The shame of a continent!!!
I used to hear about how it's a normal thing for Ethiopians (men and women) to urinate in the middle of street whenever they get the urge to pee.
I thought it was just dacaayad until I saw it with my own two eyes.
The Senegalese are 100 times better when it comes to nadaafad in the suuli.

I don't like how the Ethiopian Airlines puts regular people off of planes and gives priority to UN workers on standby to fly first. I yelled at the workers. I'm surprised I wasn't arrested by the government

Re: The shame of a continent!!!
Estarix, you have a point. Colonialism is colour blind. The ppl of the NFD have experienced it; the British and the Kenyans.
But my point was that Ethiopia as a country has been free (many african countries blame it for our misfortunes). Ethiopia, generally, is viewed as a gateway to Africa. The OAU and many other org have their HQs there.
Blue True; I have visited 25+ african countries and we could say what we want about african airports but they are clean.
Abdi J, yes, they delayed my flight too; no information and we were caged like birds into a hall .

Re: The shame of a continent!!!
Games; Africa = pibolar
On the one hand, poverty, crime, injustices, the lack of law and order, corruption, unemployment, ppl wanting to have a life beyond their means and much more heinous aspects. Tribal societies; we have not taken the evolutionary stride to modernity.
On the other, the scent, the ppl, the easy life and a sense of pride.
That is Africa.
