A constitutional referendum was held in Somalia on 20 June 1961 to vote on the new constitution for the country created the previous year by the union of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland. It was approved by 90.56% of voters.[1]

If Somalia was to exert its claim on the north through treaties, preventing SL from getting into certain agreements, or even military, no one would claim it doesn't have the right to just to do it through dialogue and cooperation.
It's not my point of view, it's facts.

It's going to be interesting to see how the IC will approach this problem the coming months. The only countries who support Somalia's expansionist claims are the Gulf countries and Egypt who are afraid of the starving Xabeshi boogeyman.
It isn't even issue about recognizing Somalia sovereignty but what would concern Somalia more is anyone supporting SL's claims, which so far none has shown willingness or interest in showing.

They're deluding themselves.....making up all kinda nonsense.
Every nation that has had any dealings with Somalia, US UK,UN,AU,Ethiopia,Kenya,EU,Arab League etc etc have all reaffirmed the territorial integrity & inviolability of Somalia. :)
They come with some crap about 1961.
Personally I don't like commenting about this issue....because it's a non issue. :)

Dr. Dameer,

How can you have a referendum when there wasn't a legal union between the two countries? In 1961, the year of the illegal referendum, the Supreme Court of Somalia based in Mogadishu could not convict Xassan Kayd and his colleagues who staged the coup in Somaliland because Somalia had no judicial claims in the territory (Somaliland) where the alleged crime took place.

Perfect Order,

There are many countries in Africa, in particular West Africa that support Somaliland's legitimate right to regain its long lost sovereignty. After the AU fact finding mission in 2005, a Somaliland delegation was invited by the former Ghanaian president to present Somaliland's case in an AU summit. Unfortunately, Africa is still in the shackles of colonial bondage. Countries such as Egypt and Sudan pressured the AU with the help of the Arab league not to give Somaliland a platform or else they would leave. If the AU wasn't a clown organization they would tell these specific countries, whose allegiance lies with the Middle East more than Africa, to hit the road.

Somalia's sovereignty is confined to the borders of former Somalia Italiana. Can you legally justify Somalia's claims on Somaliland territory? I would love to hear your argument..

Stupid qaldaaan....the legal union of somali republick was Dastuur referendum which was held all 8 regions of newly born Somali republic formed by former colonial parts of former italian-somaliland and former british-somaliland.. and over 90 procent of somali people approved by saying Yeees.. so qaldaan wiikh say never again there is no legal union.. there is no stronger legal union than DASTUUUR of union..

P.
there was NO Coup d'état in north. its tottaly fabricated by your ictirafland people.. YES there were view low level officers of army forces unhappy of not being given good possions in the army, and those low level officer were arrested. and they were not convicted because of there were no sufficient evidence to convict them.. people get away whit murder because of lack of evidance to convict them.. xasan kayd and hes low level officers were not convicted because of somalia was democratic country and justice system was indepdendent and very simply MAXKADII found them not guilty.. laakiin claiming there was no legal union between former italian-somaliland and former british-somaliland is ridiculous.

take forexample united states of america is united because of constitution of that country.. and as i said there were union consitution which democraticly somali people voted over 90% yees...

You still haven't answered my questions..

How can you have a referendum when there wasn't a legal union between the two countries?

Xassan Kayd and the military officers in Somaliland were trained at the Royal military Academy of Sandhurst compared to their Walaweyn counterparts who were Italian Zapties who swept horse manure.

It wasn't a Coup d'état. It was a coup aimed at regaining control of Somaliland before redeclaring independence.

If the Supreme Court didn't have enough evidence they wouldn't have called for trials.

You're the one who's implying that it was the 1961 referendum that united both countries, in other words, you mean that Somalia and Somaliland united in 1961.

My stance is based on facts.. There was no union. If the Act of Union that was signed in Hargeisa on June 27, 1960 was signed in Mogadishu, it would legitimize the bilerateral agreement and it would cement the union thus the 1961 referendum would become valid. However Walaweyn politicians did not sign the Act of Union because they were not sincere about Somali unity or 'Somaliweyn'. In fact, when the Somaliland delegation reached Mogadishu there were anti Somaliland demonstrations taking place for 2 days

former italian-somaliland and former british somaliland united under one country called somali republic july 1960 and all nations of the world recogniced. and from that date somali people started to form legal union whichs prepering union consititution...

it took 11 months to form a legal framework of the union whichs the constitution of the nation... and that union consittution was put in referendum general elections because it was too important for only parlement to pass it. it needed strogest legallity thats possile whichs asking somali citizens for inay ogolaadaan.. and Doorasho xaq ah 20 june 1961 was held.. and the Legal union was approved over 90% of somali people..

again and again THE LEGAL UNION OF SOMALI REPUBLIC IS THE CONSITITUTION which was approved nation wide referendum 1961.. there is no strongar legal framwork for unity of nation...

so qaldaaan stop claiming there is no legal union.. Somali republics legal union is the constitution which somali people voted 90% yes.. dhamaan wadamada aduunka.. KENYA. ETHIOPIA. SOMALIYA. SWEDEN . dhamaantood gobolada wadankooda waxay united ku yihiin waa DASTUURKA wadankooda... Somaliyana 1961 dastuur cod loo qaatay ayaa legal ka dhigay midowga former italian-somaliland and former british-somaliland..

IAM OUT my niggar..

Yalaxow,

You have to prove that Somaliland and Somalia united because there are no documents out there proving this 'union' you're talking about.

I think you misunderstand the situation. SL is the one that is day in and day out trying to justify it's sovereignty by trying to get recognized. Somalia is not trying to justify any claims because no international body or country denies it. This is why Somalia sees this as a domestic issue, not an international one. Of course SL disputes this, but they have no leg to stand on, hence why they are in this current situation.
