Did Nepotism destroy Somalia?
I'm posing a question:
Everyone agrees that the biggest factor in the collapse of the Somali State in 1991 is the lack of opportunity and bad growth in Somalia. The Government under Siad Barre could barely keep it together in the last few years of his regime.
So when Mogadishu collapsed, the entire country collapsed....bringing the entire government down. But was it nepotism that destroyed our country? I've read about how the Somali Government wouldn't allow a free market to function, and the Ministers gave away state-owned enterprises to their friends, tribal cousins and close associates....which is a clear case of corruption. It's a "family first" attitude.
I've also heard from my Uncles about how in the former Somali Government, most people could only get jobs in the government/civil service through their uncle or tribal cousin who was a Minister. Their powerful uncle would get them a well-paying job. Hence why so many of Siad Barre's family members or close friends were part of the Government, in high-ranking positions. Somalis tend to have this "family-first attitude", and you can even see it today in Puntland, Somaliland, and Mogadishu. A lot of times, the best candidates for jobs are overlooked and the job goes to someone who's closely related to the President.
And since Somalia was a closed-off society economically, with virtually NO free-market....it would be difficult for anyone to achieve success in the business world. Only a few businessmen in Somalia were lucky enough to make it, and they were often hit with heavy taxes and government regulations.
And that's what feeds almost all revolutions; lack of opportunity. Somalis were running to Saudi Arabia and UAE just to find a job. And throughout the 1980's, it was just getting worse and worse.
I do not think Somalis would have even revolted against Siad Barre's regime---even if he was a dictator---so long as there was economic opportunity, a meritocracy, and plentiful jobs. It would have functioned just like Singapore. or Rwanda....where there exists a Dictator who creates economic opportunity for his citizens. We Somalis have had Kings in the past, and it isn't far-fetched to assume that Somalis would tolerate the dictatorship as long as they were prospering and living comfortably.
And that's the biggest mistake of the Siad Barre regime, his nepotism and his terrible economic policies.

Re: Did Nepotism destroy Somalia?

Taliyaha ciidamaha gobolada waqooyi = 1980s was general Gaani whos close sub clan of siyaad bare.
later was changed on General morgan whos son inlaw of siyaad bare.
Taliyaha ciidanka 77.. was general alcohol drinker maslax siyaad bare.
ministers
Somali forginier minister= siyaad barre brother. uneducated abdiraxmaan jaamac bare.
almost all importanst embassies in europe and north america and middle east was put in charge mareexaans.
Somali central bank and bank of commerce was controlled by siyaad bares qabiil..
lama tirin karo ceebtii ay sameeyeen siyaad bare and hes qabiiil.. their Nepotism and stupity destroyed somaliya.

Re: Did Nepotism destroy Somalia?
That is just a myth my brotha majority of siad barre govt top generals and ministers were unrelated to him and come from different clans!
For example
Mohammed Said Hersi Morgan
Minister of defence he was a marjerteen!

Somalias prime minister under siad barre was from the midgaan minority clan totally unrelated
Muhammad Ali Samatar

He was a actually the on responsible for hargeisa bombing and from the midgan timar clan!
Somaliland president Sillanyo and warlord leader of SNM
He was somalias minister of commission

Not really Nepotism power & Jobs were shared equally
What destroyed somalia was the defeat of the ogaden war!
The failure in ogaden destroyed the somali Army & emptied the governments pockets several lives were lost!
Becuz of this multiple clans attempted coups the marjerteens and the isaaqs!
This would have been a perfect time for siad barre to step down and leave a legacy of as a father of the somalination! His accomplishments would have been idolized!
But instead he clang to power turning any group challenging it!
He became brutal and although not everyone was against him or his rule just a tiny group of marjerteens and isaaqs he retaliated brutally!
And fell in to the hands of evil rebel groups making his own people mistrust him! He Even killed his own relatives They wanted vendetta!
But the businesses were nationalized and somalia enjoyed lucrative trading and Merchant culture!
Some went out to connected bussiness from Outside to inside somalia to make trade and business more effective!
So no! It was due to rebel groups and siad Barre's brutality and power clinging struggle!
Purely political!
As a result of the civil war it made clans mistrust eachother and made clan relations worse and Nepotism increase After the war and clan tension disunity Ass well!
The civil war caused division now you have every clan making its own clans states!

Not Nepotism. What destroyed Somalia is what destroyed other dictatorship nations. U cant dictate forever, sooner or later the house of siyad baree was doomed to fall.

Theres one islamist minister now who was living in london before heading to his region where he will enter the politics from besides his religious and maternal relations with the big man in the office
As he studied the economics here in london besides trade being some thing thats traditional for his minority subclan, he established the chamber of commerce in his region forr the first time till he lost his position for some "laandheer" badow
this is common in every region including xamar, all the people in villa somalia belong to the prez folks, so goes for every ministry
I think the this pm is great on this side known most of his folks in the office
as for siyad barre, in his first 10 years things were different and it was not just about him, it was about all the leaders in his socialist revolution and every man has played his role
For example osman jeele-not bc hes related to me-
He graduated from egypt and him and amir salman bin abdil aziz were friends in the same university
So he was playing the foreing relations role in golaha sare specially for the arabs
the regime itself was relying on and protected by the soviet union
As soon he lost this support we have seen coup attempts like that one in 78, a year after taking advantage of bad decisions and involving the army in a war without international backing except the arabs and pakistan
At this time it was natural to depend on his clan in amniga, from the 80s...mainly three subclans from his subclan, his inlaws and abtiyaal
Some powerless individuals who were seen minority in their subclans at the same time were inlaws like morgan
But the situation was not that dangerous until 1986 when barre had a car accident
totally the country was run by a bunch of close qaraabo and reer badiye in koofiya casta, his son maslax and moorgan
All the injusts that happened since than were committing by them nothing has to do directly with siyad barre
Yacnii toos ee qabiil u noqotey iyo dhac iyo dil
Siyad barre was just dictator who has made many bad decisions

of course it was nepotism and dictatorship, however, if we were rich and majority living in comfortable life, wouldny destroyed that fast. being poor nation and dictatorship wont work that long "in the most of times".

Re: Did Nepotism destroy Somalia?
it did in oman. When the dictator sultan qabus removed his father, oman was totally shyt And he built it from nothing.Hyperactive wrote:of course it was nepotism and dictatorship, however, if we were rich and majority living in comfortable life, wouldny destroyed that fast. being poor nation and dictatorship wont work that long "in the most of times".
Some thing that the somali politicians dont know is not making alliance with those who influence the people, the big merchants, tribal leaders and religious men
How ala saud are ruling the country? They silenced the tribal and religious leaders by giving them every thing
All the gulf, jordan and syria under hafiz al asad was like that
Things get wrong when you let you let your tribe play all the roles in politics, business and deen.

Re: Did Nepotism destroy Somalia?
Sauds, even here in qatar is clear dictatorship and coruption, what let them go on is they are rich and give their people little fraction of what they steal. majority of people do not think further as long their financial needs is met.
other hand, us, somalis, we dont even know how to use our tribal society and use it in our benefit. sauds used, tribal leaders and islamic leaders their advantage by supporting them , so that bought them tribal support.
somalis not yet grown to that level. every one is ameer himself. so we all lost.

exactly. Lakin khalijka are not the same bc you got the uae specially abu dhabi where people get better wages than the westHyperactive wrote:Sauds, even here in qatar is clear dictatorship and coruption, what let them go on is they are rich and give their people little fraction of what they steal. majority of people do not think further as long their financial needs is met.

And we and saudis are not the same where petrol is cheaper than water
Ala saudi r minority who dont belong to the clans of the country, the closest to them is 3anza and they r hated by them
So they know how to play with all the tribal leaders and being silent of their origin and identity
the african leaders are stupid and have no long vision, they dont think the interests of the regime by opening all the doors for one clan

sahal, the point somalis do not know nogotiate and give little to gain much more. if you dont agree, you done mentality.
our mentality no gain for all and that somalis prefer, to loose all than give little for their enemies to become allies.
maybe after killing each other and living in povrrty for another 50 years will teach them to be tolarent and give to get.
