1. Gangs offer protection and support to members the same way tribes do. Gang members get endless supply of weed, money, and pardon my language, "bitches." Members of a tribe get money, livestock, land, and women for marriage.
2. Gangs control territory the same way tribes do
3. Gangs branch out into sets the same way clans branch out into subclans
4. Different sets within the same gang go to war with each other the same way subclans in the same clan go to war with each other
5. Sets make alliances with sets of rival gangs to fight sets of the same gang the same way Somalis make alliances with subclans from different tribes (e.g. Abgaal and Majeerteen vs. Habar Gidir or Marehan and Cayr vs. Kablalax
6. Gangs question random people on the street the same way Somalis ask what tribe you belong to
7. Both are armed to the teeth and are always prepared for war
8. Skirmishes and ceasefires are commonplace
9. OG's (original gangsters) help broker ceasefires the same way Somali elders end clan skirmishes
10. Both make abtirsi: Somali says, "I'm Clan __, subclan __, sub-subclan __, etc. Gang member says, "I'm reppin' __, Southside, 109th Street, Chester Block" for example
11. Both are extremely detrimental to their people and cause bloodshed, instability and mayhem in their respective communities
Sets from the same gang going to war is commonplace. Sets from the Crips go to war with each other, same with the Bloods. A classic case of Crip-on-Crip violence is the longstanding war between the Rollin' 60s and the Eight Tray Gangster Crip factions. More Crips have died as a result of this war than with their war against the Bloods.
This can be compared to Somali subclans belonging to the same clan fighting each other. There have been many cases of Darood-on-Darood, Isaaq-on-Isaaq, and Hawiye-on-Hawiye violence. Examples of this include the animosity between Majeerteen and Marehan or Ogaden and Marehan, the infamous Habro Wars that rocked the North during the mid-90s, and the most destructive inter-clan war, Abgaal vs. Habar Gidir.
There are also cases of sub-sub clans going to war with each other such as the case of Sacad, Saleebaan, and Cayr, sub-subclans of the Habar Gidir subclan of the Hawiye tribe.
Also, certain Crip sets are allied to Blood sets to target rival fellow Crip sets the same way Omar Jess allied his Ogaden SPM rebel faction with the Hawiye USC rebel faction against fellow Darood factions.
This evidence clearly exhibits the similarities of Somali tribes and American street gangs. In essence, Somali tribes are hereditary gang organizations. Both are a curse to their people and bring great suffering and humiliation.
Somali tribes and street gangs are one and the same
