Somali Americans

Post by GAMES »

We have done alot. We are the most influential Qurbo Joogs. Even though we live 8, 677 miles (13,994 Km), every Somali government since the civil war appoints a Somali from here.

Most presidents make their first journey to visit us in North America. Even Somaliland, Puntland, and Galmudug, they come to the US to rally support.

Not only that, Somali Americans set the standard for media, business (Ganacsi), Somalis elected to local US or Canadien governments, Police officers and everything else.

No other Diaspora comes close to Somalis in America. You would think the Somalis in Europe, Arabaha, Kenya who are closer would be more influential, but NO...its the Somalis in America.

Most remittances/Xawaalado back to Somalia comes from us in America.

Heck, the top 10 most visited Somali sites are American, including this one and other media sites.

Somali Americans (and Canadians to a lil extend) Allow dhowr.

Sure we do have crime here where Somalis are involved, but thats nothing compared to the grand scheme of things.

I just wish Siyaad Barre aligned himself more with Americans and western countries than eastern.

90% of all Somalis live in western countries.

No, they come here to raise money. Because lacag ayaa hadasho and everything else walks.

I've been to at least 15 Xaflado in the last 10yrs, from every Maamul Goboleed and thousands of Somalis show up.

Just 2 months ago, a Minister from Galmudug showed up in my city and close to 300 Somalis showed up to raise money for a new Hospital in Cadaado.

He didn't come here to meet Americans, because no one recognizes Galmudug, but he came here to meet his tol.

Somali Americans got lacag and influence, just admit it.

Proud Somali-American up in hurr

I don't think I would feel like I belong anywhere else(besides maybe Canuckia). Australia, Western Europe, the UK ee Mamo Elizabeth, Scandaniva, may all be more liberal and have a higher quality of life, and even have stronger civil rights & freedoms, but I still would not feel like I belong to the land. Part of me would always feel like a foreigner. Maybe this is unfounded, since I have never been there, but from what I read, and the people I talk to.....that's just how I feel. A German, a Swede, an Aussie, an Englishman, can always tell me: "Go back to where you came from".....and he would have a point, even when/if I karbaash the qashin out of him(dat somali temper doe).

Here tho, in the New World, I feel like I belong,...dhulka yaa iga xigo? yaa ii dhihi karo: "go back to where you came from". More importantly, I identify strongly with the principles & values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and (most, not all) of the Constitution, the first such official statement of liberal values and the triumph of the individual & individual-rights, over the tyranny of religion, culture, dogma, & tradition. Here, in the New World, from the craggy New England coastline to the warm sun & fun of SoCal, there is no talk of jizya/poll-tax nor pogroms; no Official State Orthodoxy; no "waryaa-hee, ma faqash baa tahay".

May this Great Democratic Republic of Ours, a unique experiment in the history of mankind grow and prosper; and may we truly live up to our secular-liberal principles & values and become that "shining city on the hill" where all men are not only created equal, but treated equal, and afforded opportunities equally and where every man and woman is judged not by color, creed, or orientation, but by the "content of their character", as Ditoore King Yare put it.

And may we, Soomalida ee geeska Afrika, idin'Ebbe, create a similar "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" back in a Gobolo Mideysan ee Soomaliyeed(GMS)

Not all that glitters is gold. There are blemishes in America's past and present history. All in all, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the West but America.

^^ Agreed. My post was overly positive, and the injustices & inequities, historical & present-day are more than blemishes; they are deep stains of shame & infamy, but at the very least, we as a country are willing to talk about it and address those deep stains, as opposed to other countries like Turkey where talking about the Armenian Genocide gets you thrown in jail. Or Somalia, where writing a book that criticizes the archaic & wrongly interpreted apostasy laws, gets you death threats and you have to go into hiding.

The beauty of America is that there is always room for self-criticism and self-correction(abolition of slavery) and due to that, there is always room for Reform, for Growth, for Change, and for Hope.
