GAROWE, Somalia-National Electric Corporation of Somalia (NECSOM) has launched first solar energy project to produce electricity through a technology hailed as milestone in the East African country on Monday, Garowe Online reports.

Puntland Vice President Abdihakin Abdullahi Haji Omar, former Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole, cabinet members, parliamentarians, officials from Nugal regional administration, Garowe Mayor, business community members and civil society activists attended the flagship event in the state capital, Garowe.

Solar panels will store thermal power in a country in abundance of sun following three years of pilot studies and installations.

NECSOM CEO, Abdifatah Kismayo announced that the company has lowered price per kilowatt from a staggering USD 0.95 to USD 0.89.

Event speakers welcomed new renewable energy production, asking for the company to treat traditional Garowe consumers with much care.

Former Puntland President, Abdirahman Farole praised rare boost for clean energy output and went at length about formerly Nugal Electric Corporation (NEC)’s improving electricity production capacity.

Vice President Amey urged NECSOM management to speed up and further expand solar energy initiatives.

Established on Dec. 20, 2002, NEC which now goes by NECSOM tries to match growing electricity consumption, mainly in burgeoning Garowe.

This is nice development and I do support it wholeheartedly, but charging consumers $0.89 is too much. This is solar electricity after all.

BECO (Banaadir) charges $0.79 WHILE USING OIL to produce the electricity!

That's what happens when people don't have competition, prices will come down once more players join the solar business.

The [State] government should pressure them to charge less sxb. It would be somewhat acceptable if they were using oil, but because they are using renewable energy their expenses are not that much!

Ganacsatadu Ilaahey ha ka baqaan.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the title was: Finally we can afford to open larger factories but I was disappointed when I saw the price! Cidina nooma maqna, ceelna nooma qodna.

This looks good!

Somalis are always innovative when it comes to business and horumar, Mansha Allah.

I foresee many solar companies taking their place in Somalia if Allah wills.
