I do understand if Somalis from East Africa seek medical help. Health facilities are primitive and doctors are a bunch of profit maximizers (many of them do not qualify as doctors in the west). So, an MP seeking medical help due to liver diseases/ cancers /kidney failures is rational. BTW, for many it is too late.

I also understand if the patient is from the UK. It seems that there is a long waiting list at the best hospitals and cancer drugs (latest and experimental) are out of the reach of the poor.

But Somalis from Holland? The Nordic countries? Canada? USA?

I had a chat with a friend of mine who runs a clinic in Darmstadt, Hessen. He was trained in Sweden (specialist). He runs a clinic in the Frankfurt area and told me that he meets many somali patients from the Nordic countries. One time, he met a patient who was under the care of his former supervisor at one of Sweden's most reputable university hospital.

He told me that one main reason why Somalis flock to Germany is because German doctors prescribe painkillers to patients who state that they are experiencing pains; so if a patient diagnosed with a cancer visits them, after various tests (and the knowledge that the cancer is terminal) they prescribe a painkiller. The short term impact is that the patient feels that he/she is treated.

And the narrative that Germany is the place to be if you are sick gains momentum.

Guhaad waa runtaa. Even Australian Somalis flock to Germany. I met this middle aged Somali woman who had a deadly leukemia. She underwent chemo-treatment in Australia. Her cancer spread to other organs and there was no hope. She came to Germany; showed her papers to the doctors. She was prescribed painkillers and was telling everyone that she was cured. A few months later, she died.

We rather ignore a trusted doctor to trek to different places before even giving the local one a chance.

Most countries/doctors will easily help them manage the pain while they lived with dignity in those last days without drastically killing that little bit of health left in them.

I met a woman recently who claimed to be suffering from isfiilito (syphilis) and when she was told that tests showed that she is negative, she got so angry and claimed that Dr. XX was not a good doctor. Other societies (probably) will be happy to hear about this kind of news but not a somali.

Education could be an answer but how do you educate the waan-daadshe nation? When everybody thinks and claim to be educated?

IQ? I am not sure about that saaxib. I think it has to do with the institutionalised culture of " follow the flock" mentality. I have been talking to older to people and this waan daadshe mentality is not older than 30 years.

This issue is one of many other issues; languages is another waan-daadshe issue. A somali would tell you that he/she is fluent in Arabic, Italian, English, Swedish and when you hear them speak, they have a toddler's command.

P.s. I gather that some doctors(somali) have opened clinics in London using the German card. From what I know, many of them are not qualified as doctors but they employ German doctors.
