Spiritual Kingsmen

``Knowing that material and spiritual progress are essential to man, We must ceaseless work for the equal attainment of both. Only then shall We be able to acquire that absolute inner-calm, so necessary to our well-being. Whenever conflict arises between material and spiritual values, the conscience plays an important role and anyone who suffers from a guilty conscience is never really free from this problem until he makes peace with himself and his conscience. Discipline of the mind is the basic ingredient of genuine morality and therefore spiritual strength. Spiritual power is the eternal guide, in this life and the life after, for man can reach the summit destined for him by the Great Creator. Since nobody can interfere in the realm of God we should tolerate and live side by side with people of different faiths, In the mystic tradition of the different religions we have a remarkable Unity of Spirit. Whatever religion they may profess, they are Spiritual Kinsmen. While the different religions in their historic forms bind us to limited groups and militate against the development of loyalty to the world community, the Mystics have already stood for the fellowship of humanity ... in harmony with the spirit of the mystics of ages gone by. No one should question the faith of others, for no human being can judge the ways of God.

With the raising of all men to their rightful dignity and honor as individuals, they will be able to regard their fellows, of whatever nation, of whatever race, of whatever religious, linguistic or historic tradition, as equals, without jealousy, without fear fear, without undue pride.

Until bigotry and prejudice and malicious and inhuman self interest have been replaced by understanding and tolerance and good-will...``

My take on that quote is the never ending struggle for human to find a natural balance between Material/worldly and Spiritual values. And as I like to think of myself as a spiritual person (more interested/concerned with the spiritual side of our faith) it makes Absolutely no sense to neglect or not take into account the material values and daily requirements of this world we live in that comes in the form of commodities and our interaction with our environment using every tool in our disposal. Planning for the future and to strive to move forwards and better ourselves requires reconciling the two.

I also think that Spirituality doesn't necessarily mean belonging to a particular religion. One doesn't have to Muslim, Christian or Zoroastrian to be spiritual and do good.

In a nutshell, once the correct balance is reached between Spiritual and material values, its like one hand washing the other.

I agree with the quote somewhat. Apart from spiritual and material fulfillment we also need a connection with our physical being. That is why I am a big fan of excercise and martial arts in the strive to attain physical perfection with the reduction of your own human physical weaknesses as much as is possible individually.

Thank you jalaal,

The quote somehow reminded me of The Prophet Muxammad SCW saying: to paraphrase iit :
"worship Allah as if today is your day on earth and work as if you will live forever" (I think it was also said by Sayid Cali RA and I am sorry I can not recall the exact wordings)

But to me this emphasises the need to balance worldly blessings Allah has given with our eternal abode in the after life!

It was Ali (ra) who said...... " Work for a Better Life as if you live forever,
And work for Better End as if you die tomorrow"

Gandhi also said

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
