Hawdian Presents...SDB

Recommendations:

Somaliland Development Board (SDB).

Members drawn from government (3), private (3) and civil groups (5).

The agency works in collaboration with other agencies such as Somaliland Development Fund, private sector, public and the government.

The likes of SDF should only release funds for projects/ideas/visions undertaken and carefully assessed and finally approved by SDB.

Mission: To create and facilitate a dynamic environment for investment, business, and innovation. To undertake goals that would help SL transform into an important financial and technology hub in the region.

Sectors:

Financial services such as creating strong banking sector that consists of commercial, microfinance, development (eg SDF should become a bank) and cooperative banking. This should be coupled with strong financial education to all Somaliland youth starting from primary education. The goal should be to prepare them for nation-wide financial inclusion (both formal and informal). By educating them they should both have faith in the system and help create more stronger financial institution.

When this happens we can achieve something like (across sector integration/engagement)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp6xzKLbT8Q

After that we need to create insurance laws, insurance companies (with focus on non-life insurance, public insurance).

Four areas we need to heavily focus are: ICT, finance, infrastructure and education. We need a government that behaves like a government not a group that chases the world for 'ictiraaf'.

Before asking the world for recognition you have to first dress yourself like a government. They say FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT and begging for ictiraaf is not faking it.

Other important schemes we can create is to establish financial database for all the Diaspora. For every $100 they send, they should invest $1 in SL projects. If the Diaspora remittance is worth $800m then that's $8 million. That money can easily fund more development.

The benefit for the Diaspora is that once they return they produce their membership card and they enter the country without airport entry tariff. Also making investing in SL easier for them (quicker process, perhaps discount for lands).

I rather collect $1 from Diaspora than charge 5000-10,000 visitors the $50 airport fees.

You got the message.

You have a lot of good ideas....however, your labouring under the illusion that s/l regime is a progressive and innovative Govt.
All Somali entities, along with their politicians, are deeply conservative and rooted in 1980s governing style.
Ngo politics is all they know....with their fingers in the pie. Politicians will always pursue what's in their financial interest and not the country's. :)

PS good luck with that though

OD,

I am aware of the current leaders, attitudes, challenges and all the other issues that shackled the Somali race but you can't let it defeat you.

We do not need to join them either.

Before we see the big bright flame, we need little smoke. Before we burn the fire wood, we need to lit the dry grass.

This is the approach.

I am just sharing but my plan is to have my own think tank on developmental issues and consult on pressing issues.

I am currently working on my academia credentials and expanding my knowledge in various fields especially finance, policy, entrepreurial, innovation and IT.

We need to work on some economic models and start putting things in place even if it's small. I know these things are doable and not some fantasy.

That's true enough.....perhaps through private enterprise advancements can be made.
However, you saw the reaction to the plan to reopen the cement plant in Berbera.
Never underestimate a Somali's ability to shoot himself in the foot. :)
