Re: The Truth About 'Black Lives Matter'
BLM is a grassroots movement given birth to by young 'coloured people' of many backgrounds and ethnicities dedicated to abolish institutional racism and State (police) violence. Police discrimination have been experienced by many young American Somali men and women. Recently, a court has thrown out a case against a dozen or so young Somalis alleged to have been sexually trafficking underage Somali girls. The court found that this case has been falsified and doctored by the female law enforcement officer who was in charge of the investigation. It has caused enormous damage to the reputation and the image of the Somali community and in particular to young people. These young Somali Americans identified their issues with and felt solidarity with their fellow 'coloured young people' and joined BLM to highlight such discriminatory practices against them by agents of the State. Why are people here so negative of these brave young men and women? The reason is that our community is divided and disjointed and the only time you see us demonstrating is with our clans and it is mostly women and children demonstrating in front of a hotel against a visiting Somali official who is deemed to be against the interests of the clan. An inclusive movement such as the BLM challenges us in many levels. Let's learn from them.
