My life is in danger over khat ban

Post by TheblueNwhite »

Says Peter Munya, the governor of Meru.
Mr Munya said he was aware of miraa business cartels "that include murderers who are not afraid of carrying out their heinous acts," who were now targeting him. "The cartels have started targeting me with lots of propaganda concerning the market. It is a really worrying situation," he said, adding, "I am being accused of being a hindrance in the marketing of miraa. How can I work against my people?" Munya, who has been accused of breaching protocol by engaging the autonomous Somaliland in the volatile Somalia republic, blamed his political opponents for waging a smear campaign against him.
The governor claimed that former prominent Meru politician Ntai wa Nkuraru was killed over the miraa issue, and he would not want the same to happen to him.
Wednesday, Munya refuted the claims, saying the Somali government had explained that it had closed its airspace because of current air traffic due to an international summit. "The Government of Somalia has said it was closing the airspace for a few days because of Igad but some propagandists here want to drag Munya into the issue," the outspoken governor fumed.

I heard Kenya lost over $5 million dollars of khat-revenue over the past few days. I hope the ban is permanent, well, at least until they drop all claims to Somali maritime territory.

Khalid is a staunch Somaliander. I applaud him for his patriotism. Sadly, he has gone too far and is now a far-right Ictiraaf extremist. :D

Meru County Woman Representative Florence Kajuju has called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to initiate talks with the government of Somalia over the ban on miraa.

Speaking on the sidelines of an inspection tour of the Lunga Lunga one stop boarder post by the parliamentary committee on regional integration which she chairs, Ms Kajuju termed the decision as regrettable.

She suggested that the issue has to be taken up diplomatically and through the ministry of foreign affairs in order to ensure that the ban does not persist.

Ms Kajuju explained that after the ban of miraa in the United Kingdom, the county relied entirely on the sale of stimulant in Somalia.

She added that within the two days that the ban has been imposed, over Sh100 million has been lost hence affecting the traders, farmers and their families.

“Basically as the people of Meru County, our livelihood relies on miraa. Out of the proceeds of miraa we have been able to educate our children and even cater for other expenses,” she said.

The Somali government blamed Meru Governor Peter Munya over the ban following his visit to Hargesia in July.

“We learnt with a lot of concern that the central republic of Somalia has imposed a ban on cargo planes that transport miraa to the country. It is actually a very regrettable decision,” she said.

Ms Kajuju accused Mr Munya for what she termed as taking upon himself matters which are beyond his mandate.

“If Mr Munya is the reason as to why this ban has been imposed then he missed a very huge point and he does not deserve to be a leader of the people of Meru County,” she said.

The remarks were backed the MP for Igembe Central Kubai Iringo who asked the governor who is also the chairman of Council of Governors to stop meddling in international affairs.

“We pray that the Somali government will listen to us and find that Mr Munya was not a representative of Kenya and we can say he was not a representing Meru because he wanted to kill the Meru community,” he said.

ANGRY REACTION

And at Kautine in Igembe Central, farmers who reacted angrily at the announcement by the Somali government threatened to deny President Uhuru Kenyatta votes in next year's election if no efforts are made to lobby against the ban. :)

They said at no other time has the miraa industry faced such restrictions with no help from the government.Mr John Kubai said the government should use diplomacy to retain the Somalia market."Sh1 billion was given to cushion farmers from the losses. We are yet to know the whereabouts of that money.

Genius plan. This guy is a comedian.

GAME Plan on HOW TO STEAL 1BILLION MIRAA FUND
1. Quietly ask Somali admin to “ban” miraa in their territory.

2. Provoke demos in Meru land blaming the ban on some problematic governor.

3. Invite a delegation from Somali govt or send a delegation there to discuss.

4. With a billion bob set aside for miraa industry share the loot half-half both sides.

5. Lift the ban and “reopen” the market.

6. With the market asured and one billion “accounted” for,…game shot.

Khalid......your thinking is too extreme and out of date.
Most iidoor are resigned to the fact that pleading for recognition is futile.

We saw the outcry from ordinary somalilanders when the Govt refused to let the Hawiye refugees from Yemen to disembark.
The majority of iidoor recognize their problems stem from poor leadership and policies....not southern bogeymen. :)
