Anyone own Warriors: Life and death among the Somalis?

Post by Estranged »

Assalaamu'alaykum everyone
I'm new to this forum. I was wondering if any of the posters here own the pdf copy of the book 'Warriors: Life and death among the Somalis' by Gerard Hanely
I've wanted to read that book for a very long time, but can't get my hands on it. And it's too expensive to purchase on Amazon. Is there anyone here who can send me the pdf copy if they have it? If you need my email address I can pm it to you.
Also, feel free to advertise and share other great books about the Somalis. I heard 'Blood and Bone: The call of kinship in Somali Society' by I.M. Lewis was another very good book.

It's Rageh Omar's favourite book on Somalia.

the book was written by some Irish world war II vet, patrolling Somali nomads. This Rageh Omar must be one illiterate superficial blond.

Lool you responded over a year later. I've read the book and have mixed feelings about it. He seemed more open minded and less racist than what you would expect from a colonialist. But also came across as very patronising and as though he was speaking from a higher ground, intellectually and morally. And he was calling our homeland 'The Shag' or something (or was this just a specific region?)

Still an interesting read though.

'Shag' = desert if I recall correctly.

You should avoid reading that book and any Somali for that matter should avoid that book. It follows the noble savage fiction narrative so common in many orientalistic work.

95% of written work about Somalis on the internett/academia is orientalist. Its a mistake to read those books made by these Europeans thinking you will learn anything useful about yourself and your people.
