Question for Car Doctors
If you have a car with little over 100,000 miles on it, the transmission fluid has not been changed for awhile, and you have a mechanic advising you not to bother it, would you accept it?
I am a bit skeptical on why would you leave an old transmission fluid there if you know it is old and can damage the transmission parts. His assertion is that, due to the mileage on the car and the look of the old transmission fluid, the new transmission fluid can reveal underlying issues that the old transmission fluid would've suppressed.
Understood but then according to the former owner of the car, the higher mileage on the car is partly caused by him traveling on highways, and not necessarily inner city and not due to an age.
I am more inclined to follow the advice of the former owner of the car but then a mechanic who also have been in this business can't be ignored.
What do you think?

Re: Question for Car Doctors
I don't know what Americans call it "transmission" but here is some facts:
If the car have high mileage as you told us, change the Engine oil, oil filter, fuel filter, and air filter. check brake pads and brake discs as well.
If I am not mistaken, transmission is Gearbox , if so, don't bother changing it.

100k miles is nothing if it's a Japanese car...my first car in high school was a Honda with 365k kms (225k mil) lol.MujahidAishah wrote: Tue Apr 18, 2017 3:54 am Inadr over 100k in mileage the car is on it last legs even my dasaad had 68k on the clock

Gegiroor, get a second opinion from another mechanic. If the car was mostly driven on the highway you shouldn't need to change it, but it doesn't hurt to get another person to assess the vehicle.

Honda and Toyotas are the most reliable cars on the road so it's natural that Somalis gravitate towards to them. Nissans are also very popular among Somalis though they aren't as reliable.

Zidane, yes transmission is gearbox. I see you agree with the mechanic. The look of the fluid is what bothered me. I went to youtube and saw another mechanic explaining it. His advice is: First lift the car up, drain the fluid, take the whole transmission/gearbox down, open it up and take it apart. If it was engine, I would follow his guidance, but taking whole transmission/gearbox apart? I never did it and but at least I'll try to lift it up and drain the fluid. I learned transmission flush is never good for transmission parts, especially when the car is older.
