What are the Old Somali Words You Know?
Anyone wanna share? If you got them share 'em. I've heard of ori for wife, so' for meat and this saying " So' iyo sar toona ma laha" meaning it has neither meat or hide.

The word for the step mother is Aya, so if your dad has a second wife you call her Aya, but today I believe you call her Eedo. Interesting for me.

Ori meaning wife is NOT an old Somali and is a word used throughout the Somali territories though the word 'xaas' (an imported word) is more often used.thelionwithfire wrote: Tue Nov 07, 2017 9:02 am Anyone wanna share? So = meat, - is not old Somali but is an obscure word which is still in use and widely used in many regions and at same time is hardly used in some and never used in some Somaali deegaans.
Sar = hide, - the same goes for this word.
thelion,
From the words you have used as an example of 'old Somali' , I think what you are looking for is obscure words or such words that are not known by the 'Say Walaahi' generation and the 'gareeyn' (as in waxaan try-gareeyn) folks of the diaspora folks, another words the heedless, illiterate, ill informed and lacking in vocabulary and for such folks any Somali word that is new to them and not used in their circles, is 'old' Somali or belongs to some other deegaan.
And here are couple of obscure and hardly ever used by the heedless present generation;
Tiraale which means a number
Arimi which means affect

In Old Galbeed we call anybody that your father married to other than your Mom and also your Uncles wives as Ayo. I chuck that word in the Bin and call my Uncle's wife as Habiyar. My Dad calls his Stepmom as Mamo what ever her name is.RookieMan2017 wrote: Tue Nov 07, 2017 1:47 pm The word for the step mother is Aya, so if your dad has a second wife you call her Aya, but today I believe you call her Eedo. Interesting for me.
The Galbeed stopped using the word Ayo because it's very confusing.
Your Uncles wives are your Ayo.
Your Stepmother is your Ayo.

Why don't you chuck the word Adeer also in the Bin? as it is by your logic also confusing.theologain wrote: Tue Nov 07, 2017 8:37 pmIn Old Galbeed we call anybody that your father married to other than your Mom and also your Uncles wives as Ayo. Your Uncles wives are your Ayo.
Your Stepmother is your Ayo.
Your stepfather is your Adeer
(note that Somalis NEVER call their stepfather Aabo/father but only Adeer)
Your father's brother/cousin ( your uncle) is your Adeer
Your aunties' (Eedo) husbands are Adeer
(bare in mind that your maternal aunties' (haboyar) husbands are Not Adeer but Abti)
Btw, where is this Galbeed that has stopped using the word Aayo located? Is it a new Galbeed that was discovered by some nescience explorers?

I know what you are talking about, it is called Dumaal. Usually a widow or divorcee marries ur fathers relative. How about if your mother marries your cousin. You can't call ur cousin adeer warya.TheLoFather wrote: Tue Nov 07, 2017 9:15 pmWhy don't you chuck the word Adeer also in the Bin? as it is by your logic also confusing.theologain wrote: Tue Nov 07, 2017 8:37 pmIn Old Galbeed we call anybody that your father married to other than your Mom and also your Uncles wives as Ayo. Re: What are the Old Somali Words You Know?
Malooli = a casterate ram
Dhufaan = a castrated camel
Asmo = a spell casted on weapons before a war.
Awlax = long spear
Hooto = short spear
Ashqaraar = bewilderment
I can go on and on. But what is purpose of listing extinct Somali. Now when I listen or read Somali news I almost puke in my mouth.
Recently I have noticed Somali elites are fighting hard to replace the entire Somali vocabulary with bastardized Arabic or English.
" hudheel laga banneeyey ( bana the Arabic for building) why not just use dhisay?
I guess they think if they use Arabic for everything Somali they will get closer to the Arab paradise and if they pepper their Somali with English words they will sound educated.
Two days ago one former SL vice president used the term " ethic" advising the election contenders to be ethical! Why couldn't he use anshax a simple Somali word.
