Somali Army, UN Arms Embargo and AMISOM Withdrawal

Post by AyubD »

On Jan 5, Harun Maruf published his article in the Voice of America titled Turkey Gives Weapons to Somali Soldiers.

I have few questions after reading the article and its commentary section.

1. Why Turkey plans to train only 10,000 Somali soldiers? Or is it just the initial phase? What are their long-term plans?

2. Since the AMISOM draw-down plans are known, is UN planning to lift the arms embargo off Somalia?

Right now, Turkey can legally only supply light weapons. But after the AMISOM is out, Somali army will need armored vehicles, transport and attack helicopters, etc. I am sure Somali government has organizational plans for the army, especially considering Turkish army is highly organized. It almost feels like we are not getting the full story.

If UN refuses to lift the embargo and AMISOM leaves, the natural step for Turkey would be to take over the peace-keeping operation and bring in heavy arms. Turks can act as one, but let the newly trained and well equipped Somali soldiers run the actual operation under the Turkish military command.

In few years, Turkey can build up a really strong Somali army. Once the embargo is lifted, they can hand over the peace-keeping operation to Somalis completely.

Turks really need to bring in their Arma, Cobra2 and Ejder Yalçın armored carriers, along with the T129 Attack Helicopter and ANKA drones to smoke Al-Shabab out of Somalia.

Ejder Yalçın

Cobra 2

Turkey economy is growing rapidly, and they see Somalia as a valuable customer, remember turkeys airline made huge turnover from its flights to Somalia Aden adde airport in Mogadishu, they picked somalia as a reliable partner when no other nation did, when other nations were busy stealing from us and sabotaging our progress. If Somalia gets its act together, we will be able to live off from lawsuits especially against Kenya !

Imagine if Turks did not come to Somalia. We would still be treated as a no go zone. I mean the international community still manages its operations in Somalia from Nairobi. Think about that for a moment!

I doubt we would have gotten back the control of our airspace if Turks did not start supporting the central government.

The new airport and the daily flights by the major international carrier, Turkish Airlines, put Mogadishu back on the map. It provides easy connection to the rest of the world. I am pretty sure the Somali diaspora finds it convenient.

The main benefit of Turkish presence is that it gives impetus to Somalia to rise again.

Not trying to diminish Hassan Sheikh Mahamud's well-deserved praise, but Sharif Sheikh Ahmed was the one who jump-started the Somali-Turkish cooperation in 2011. He is still well-received in Ankara.

These two corrupt politicians did at least something that would outlast them and benefit the country.

Somalia wants to move forward and liberate itself from the skinnies. The main thing that Turkey can do militarily for us is to instill strong army management structure and then provide modern weapons. If they send 2,000 officers to run the Somali army, we can fight ourselves. No more khat-chewing clan-based poorly-trained soldiers running around like thugs in technicals.

I saw in the video the real military officers training Somali soldiers in the Turkish base. That's a good beginning.

I read their 2017 GDP growth is over 7%, which is one of the highest in the world. Turkish military industrial complex is expanding rapidly, especially in the naval and air-defense sectors. We need few of their naval ships and submarines to safeguard our territorial waters, especially from state actors like Kenya.

This year Turkish light transport helicopter TAI T625 will start flying. If they provide few of them for Somali army, it can become an extremely useful tool in the quick delivery of combat troops to areas of conflict.

Even farmaajo is corrupt as could be seen when his govt declared onlf a terror organisation. Difference is that sheikh shareef is the reason why we'll have a somali comprised army soon.

I am pretty sure there are a lot of shady activities in the government since most of the actors have been in the Somali political thick for a long while. Farmajo is an outsider. For now I withhold labeling farmajo as corrupted one. The ONLF debacle is more of his weakness unless it is a known fact that Farmajo is being paid by Ethiopia.

The Somali army needs to look at acquiring light transport planes, maybe Turkey can let us use some of theirs. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) manufactures midium-range transport plane CN-235 under license from CASA/IPTN. Its primary military roles include maritime patrol, surveillance, and air transport. It would be perfect for keeping an eye on our territorial waters as well as transporting troops quickly within the country and even for conducting relief operations. Turkish military operates 59 of this planes.

Freeloaders weapons cost money for the ones military industry. They have to make profits on their products or companies will not be able to innovate and research and pay their employees. Somalia has no cash to offer this isn’t food charity.

Unless Somalia take loans that it cannot pay in the near future. Turkey itself is developing country that can’t give away military Hardware for free.
