What saved Ethiopia from Somalia 1977

Post by Adali »

The Cuban leader decided to send troops to support the Ethiopians as Somali forces drove deeper into Ethiopia. In September 1977 the Soviet Union established an air bridge to save the Ethiopians, pouring $1 billion worth of military equipment into the country. At one time a Soviet aircraft was landing in Addis Ababa every 20 minutes. Castro sent 11,600 Cuban troops and more than 6,000 advisers.

The United States, which had backed Ethiopia, switched sides. President Jimmy Carter, deeply worried by the Soviet and Cuban deployment, withdrew support from the Ethiopians, backing Somalia instead. But after divisions within his own administration, Carter refused to send a carrier force to counter the Soviets and Cubans.

The reinforcements did the trick. By March 1978 the Ogaden town of Jijiga had been recaptured by Cuban and Ethiopian troops led by Soviet and Cuban officers. Although the WSLF continued fighting in the Ogaden for several years, the Somali attempt to capture the region was over.
fast forward to 2018 Ethiopia is yet again in turmoil, last time they were in this predicament we ended up having forces a few kilometres outside of Addis Ababa.

This time their instability and near collapse will loosen their grip on Somalia, their intelligence officers, their military, and even their budget will be downsized when it comes to Somalia.

in 2017 Somalia new president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo was elected, and since then the country is on an upward trajectory, today soviet union does not exist, and Mr trump said he has had enough of shitty african countries, no one will save Ethiopia, Egypt is waging war on them soon, and Saudia, Yemen will not help them, recently Saudia arrested the biggest investor from their country who invest in Ethiopia.

Somalia on the other hand has strengthen ties with nations who play a big role in the regional geopolitics, including Turkey, Sudan, Qatar.

Delusions from a Boon high on fermented Quule.

Afweyne fought Ethiopia because his Ayrab masters (sent by the West) told him to.

Castro met Afweyne in Mogadishu and Aden, personally asking him to accept a peace deal with Mengistu and the possibility of creating a confederation that would include the Somali Democratic Republic, Ethiopia and South Yemen.

A move that would totally exclude the capitalist West from the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden and the strategic shipping land (Bab el Mandeb) leading to the Suez Canal.

Afweyne refused despite his claims of being a Marxist.

Today the capitalist West lead by the US control the strategic shipping lanes and they use post Afweyne Zoomalia, existing as a result of Afweynes stupidity, as an excuse to control the Horn of Africa and Bab el Mandeb.

why would we want to be in a country with habesha and yemeni midgets, I am 6'1 I would fit better in with the dinkas than the highland midgets and the desert rats

Siyaad Barre was never marxist, Somali National socialism, similar to that of Hitlers Germany without the race baiting.

Every nation is looking at their own interest, while you are looking after foreign nations interest, and clan interest, what have you to say for yourself mate.

I am interesting in discussing the current dynamics of Ethio politics, there is massive turmoil in Ethiopia, there is internal unrest as well as threat from Egypt.

Somalia invaded and defeated Ethiopian army, even though Ethiopians outnumber us 10 times. You right the christian jesus loving cubans saved ethiopia, as well as russians.

The west is mildly pro-ethiopia, this alliance goes back to the Adal wars right up until the colonial era when Italy invaded and took over Ethiopia, Haile selasi said to the europeans he is on an Christian island surrounded by sea of muslim so to give him mercy, eventually the Italians were defeated in world war 2 when the fascist lost, however the west will always be fascist and Ethios are niggers so its a weak alliance.

Somali people have karti, we managed to defeat this over populated nation. But today we are not a threat to them, its Egypt that is there threat.

We must not forget that Siad Barre invaded Ogaden without African countries support. This mistake has been understimated by historians.

Somali army was forced to withdraw from Ogaden in 1982, but WSLF operations ended in 1989.

My understanding is that Barre had the Ogaden invasion planned and covertly executed on the ground long before meeting with Castro. That might explain why Castro came out of the meeting feeling the "bad" energy between them.

The Socialist federation of Ethiopia and Somalia was an utopian idea to begin with, but the real unspoken plan was to make Somalis a sub-servant subject of Ethiopia. The anticipation of Yemeni participation on a later stage was another lie.

The only benefit Somalia could have gotten from the federation with Ethiopia is that Barre could have made a pre-condition for the union to proceed if and only if Ogaden was to become a part of the Somali Republic within the federation. That would have solidified the fact that Ogaden and Somalia are one. And afterward we could have initiated the separation movement to denounce the federation and exit with Ogaden in tow out of the Ethiopian utopia.

President Carter was a beta and was openly despised my the British PM, Margaret Thatcher aka the Iron Lady, for his indecisiveness. He was Obama before Obama. :D
