I truly believe a stable Somalia does not pose an existential threat to Somaliland. A stable Somalia where it's people live in security, children go to schools, and standard of living improves will be positive for the entire region. That the government of Somaliland considers Somalia an enemy to the point it seeks security assurance from Ethiopia, former arch rival, reflects terribly on the Somali government and it's people. This forum a lone reflects the fact a significant large segment of the population in the North feels safer with Ethiopia than Somalia.

That's why there should be genuine dialogue between Somalia and Somaliland. Somalia needs to realize that any attempt to force its power on Somaliland will result in the opposite effect. Somaliland needs assurances that its rights and its security concerns are explicitly addressed by Somalia. After that both sides can start working on further confidence building measures and real cooperation.

Each time we skirmish with each other we are losing valuable time and opportunities to move forward and prosper. It is called Opportunity Cost in economics. I can envision one day the president of the whole Somalia being elected from the north and he or she will be working on infrastructure projects in the south and vice versa.

I mean of what benefit is the hatred for us? For both of sides there are zero benefits, but for some external parties there are things to be gained from the stand-off among Somalis.
