Sponsoring Somali students?

Post by original dervish »

My family and I have been sponsoring some relatives whom are studying at university in Mogadishu/ p/l and s/l.
A long story short.......most of them have been taking the piss....basically using it as an opportunity to fool around.
Some of the females absconded and got "married" then got promptly divorced.
Others have refused to send us their transcripts.......its got to the stage where I doubt some of them are even enrolled at all.

The students whom have stayed in LA and reside at their family home seem to be performing much better.
While the ones whom have moved to Xamar are performing poorly and misbehaving badly.
Furthermore.....most of them are pathological liars.

Now some of these poorly performing "students" want us to pay for student visas so they can continue the party in Turkey/ Malaysia.
My question to my fellow snetters is shall we pull the plug or continue to finance them in the hope they will eventually get it.

Let me tell you something from my own experience, at 18, went to college/uni and found out going to class was not mandatory. My new found freedom gave me ample opportunities to screw up my grades and girls 😂. Thankfully I didn’t mess up all 4 years ,and finished my science degree on time. Adult supervision is a must, especially the first year or two.

Is your cousin a cutie, I could possibly ‘sponsor’ her 😁

Supervision is the key......I may demand they have to reside in approved Salafi properties with a 10pm curfew.
PS in many of the cases it's more than just the exuberance of youth.....heck I was young once so am not gonna penalize them for experimenting.

I know for a fact there are at least a dozen other students from our village/jillib whom would bite your hand off for sponsorship.
These kids we've been supporting since high school have an entitlement mentality.

My advice is to pull the plug on the ones mogadihu. meeshu waxbarasha ma taalo. dadkii ka yimid oo jaamacaha kasoo qalin jabiyay waxbo ma yaqaan. Wallahi caay igama aha laakin dadka magalaadaas degan ayay u dhaqan xun yihiin. Nairobi or Addis Ababa inaad u dirto ayaa dhaantay dhinaca wax barashada. Even Borama ayaa dhaanto Mogadishu.

We'll ask to see their transcripts before feciding what to do.

Someone suggested that they complete their undergraduate degree successfully before being sent abroad.

Why would you send them to other regions where they wont have much supervision?

Pay for their schooling and accomodation in Las Anod, and those who show real aptitude and discipline get sent to study abroad. Turkey isnt suitable with its large population of would-be tahribis, the temptation to do something stupid is high. Malaysia/India would make a much better destination.

Benny.....one female relative wanted to go to Xamar because the uni's was better. No sooner had she got there she absconded and " married" then divorced in no time.

I think a lot of these kids just want to live anonymously and be free to do what they want.

We're stuck with a lot of them. The point was to educate them so they would be able to support themselves and families in the future. You know how tight things are in the UK these days.

At this stage you are throwing good money after bad, whats the point?

Cut your losses and send them enough for a ticket back home. The problem is the sense of entitlement particularly by those directly related to you, they dont value what you are doing because they see it as your duty. We have had a someone abandon their studies in Turkey and go on to tahrib, they had one more year to go too. Unfortunately very few will take advantage of these opportunities.

Another way might be sponsoring some of them to go to Abaarso, the atmosphere of competition there will ensure the students stay focused and perform their best. From there they can get a scholarship or you can sponsor them to study in places like India etc.

Most definitely......We will insist on them completing their undergraduate studies in Somalia before any consideration for overseas study.

A lot of them are asking to be sent to Turkey.....they can forget that.
