Are Somalis right that Australia should stop killing thousands of wild camels because of lack of water?

Post by IRONm@N »

Outraged Somalis are urging Australians to stop culling camels, and to instead send the animals to the Horn of Africa so that they can look after them.

Snipers have been shooting camels in South Australia from the air since Wednesday following concerns that extreme heat and drought were forcing the animals to encroach on human settlements in search of water. Thousands are expected to be killed.

Somalis have a deep love for camels, which they call "geel". They measure wealth and status by the number of camels that people own, not the amount of cash they have.

They also believe that after the British colonised what is now the self-declared republic of Somaliland in the 19th Century, they seized herds of camels and sent them to Australia, which was also a British colony at the time.

Others say that camels were first taken to Australia by British settlers from India, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Nevertheless, the chairman of the Somaliland Camel Herders Association, Mustafe Cali Deeq, said the animals were "very precious" to Somalis and "second" only to human beings.

He said Australia should spare the lives of the camels by sending them to where they "originally" came from.

While others said on Twitter that they could be accommodated in the whole of Mena, an acronym for the Middle East and Africa.

They kill people with ease but are hurt by camels dying indho adka!

I don’t think those camels should be killed for no reason. But Somalis should be the last people to say anything about killings.

Right, plus Somalilander were burning and killing dogs in Hargiesa last time.

I’m wondering though do they sell to Halal meats after they shoot and kill thousands of camels, because my local Halal meat was telling me they get their camel from Australia.

From business point of view it's good for us , we don't want any other country to have the same amount of camels we have. We should congratulate and support the Australians .

Still they can be sold to the Arab markets and Somalis won't eat good. Australia is our number one enemy in the livestock trade. Any Smart Somali prays Australia camel to disappear. We should even take the contract to kill them if they are not giving us.

thats geelkii dhulbahante that British took, the british tried the same with marexaan in jubaland when they said lets count geelka marexaan

the british took dhulbahante geel and gave it to iidoor and australia

dhulbahante should sue the Australians and british, there is a legal precedent

Killing 10,000 camels is culling? Culling is more like killing a few hundred here and there
