VIEWS NEEDED ON BANNING KHAT
hi everybody, DONT LOGG OFF CZ ITS TOO LONG......WORK WITH ME GUYS.....
i wanna thank you all for taking the time in reading this post. i will be posting this request on most of the somali websites.
i want you guys to help me out with this research i have to do for my Independent study on illegalization of khat in the UK.
could you, after reading the effects of khat, express your views openly and tell me whether it should be banned in the UK and why?
Physical effects:
Sleeplessness, Nervousness, Impotence, Loss of appetite, Constipation, Nightmares, Euphoria, Bleeding into the brain, Fluid or swelling in the lungs, Heart attacks, High blood pressure, Kidney damage, Liver damage, Increased intellectual efficiency, Hyper alertness, oral infection (drug digest 2005).
PsychologicaL:
psychosis: reported cases where severe psychological damage has occurred in a Somali community with three men. The report also indicated that hallucinations and depression were observed from the patients.
It has been reported that heavy smoking and high alcohol intake could increase psychosis (PJ online v272: 2004). Dr Palazidou (v272: 2004) also stated in this study that memory function and decision-making speed often damaged and caused patients to become agitated and depressed when chewed khat.
Socially:
khat users will find themselves closed off to many best jobs. Thus, because of unemployment and low-paying jobs, khat use will damage the financial status of individuals, families, and communities (Ghodse 1995). However, researches indicate the use of this substance may enhance the ability to communicate, creating a room for group interactions (Dhaifalah 2004). In contrast Pantelis (v19: 2000), reports some khat chewers experienced social isolation.
Married couples (MEN):
- decreased semen volume, sperm count, and sperm motility,DECREAsing chances of reproduction
Pregnancy:
Women that are pregnant are strongly recommended not to chew in every research or study. REASONS
massive weightloss, blood flow to the uterus, babies born to khat female chewers were smaller and the mothers also produce less milk. This clearly indicates that the excessive use of khat delays the child’s development, and this is very likely to have long term consequences (Dalu 2005).
THERE WILL BE A POLL SET-UP TO DETERMINE THE COMMUNITY'S VIEW LATER ON THIS YEAR. HOWEVER THIS HAS YET TO BE CONFIRMED WITH THE ETHICS BOARD AT THE UNIVERSITY.
THANK YOU GUYS

guys,
wether its in ur system or not in the end we need to realize that this is not healthy and maliz need to get jobs instead of chewing these leaves like goats.
and also i remember when khat was respected, ppl used to chew it as a relaxation method rather thn a another way of feeding an addiction.
it never got in the way of our family lives or working life.....now it is has changed everything malis stand for.
