Somali grocery shopping

Post by X.Playa »

Is it only where i live or do us Somalis and Gaalos differ in the amount of grocery we buy and its varieties.

For example, a single white guy would come all the way to the Save Way or Super Store and wait in that long line up for just couple pounds of cheese and some Salami cold cut, bonless lean stake, couple apples and maybe a banana or an ice cream. No spices, no oil, no rice, or any other side dish Confused spending at most $20

Few of us Somalis be it single or married would go to the grocery store and spend less then $100, 90% of it been on meat, the rest on potatoes, spices, bread, maybe the most healthy conscience of us would buy some milk or juice.

The only thing i grab from the Green-ery section or as they call it the fruits and the vegetables section , is, hot paper, potatoes and onion, maybe on my Green day i'd pick up corrindor leafs (Kamsare). And that takes me around 4 minutes at most.

I pass the Sea Food section where all the Chines are lined up eyeing the six legged monsters called Crab life once, this is the Zoo section for most Somalis, the only Somali in the Sea Food section is there for an under sea Safari , a tourist in a grocery store.

In the meat section( this the heaven for Somalis) I'd spend around 30 minutes, first the T-bone steaks, and then the Rib-eye steaks, then the ground beef , finally and reluctantly I'd pick up couple birds us Somalis weren't use to eat but have adopted to...

No sweets, no greens,

how do these white folks can spend only $20 at the grocery every day buying such a balanced food and at the end of the month gain 10lbs on their love handles , and us Somalis even get skinner..???

Is this the habit of buying food for most somalis or is it only me?

You must be living on your own if you do that yourself Laughing

Anyway, i think each household differs. Gaalos just get what they need on that particular day. They don' t buy lots of groceries that would last about 2 weeks like we somalis do. In our household we do the shopping 2/3 times a month but someone ( usually me) goes down Tesco every other day or everyday for bread, milk and so on.

I don't shop at regular groceries when I am in da mood for meat, I go to the nearest Halal Store where I can pick and choose parts of goat or sheep. Goat brain, goat tongue and eyes, kirishow mirish and cow hooves yummy!!!! Has anyone tasted these delicacies?

As corn bread goes, muufo is something special. I think it's the flour corn and garlic. Does anyone have a recipe that will work with Western ingredients and a Western oven?

Served with stewed ari liver and tomatoes ....Heaven!

Somali and Western diets do differ considerably, but it sounds to me like that single white guy was buying just for the moment or the day, or supplementing what he already had at home. Family households of my acquaintence buy in considerable quantities. Most Mormon families store an entire year's supply and then supplement with fresh meat, milk, produce, etc.

Lol@ You are an X playa if u do that, my girl does that for me....Xasid

Xoogsade, walaal all of us don't live in Columbus, sorry to disappoint.

Speaking of meat, there aren't many Somalis in my city probably 50-75 at most. There are these Ogadeen guys who opened up a hilib xalaal store. And do you know they have the audacity to think that just because they're Somali you'll go to them? My mom and aunt went there a couple of times, their service is horrible,it's way under staffed, the cleanliness of the place isn't that great either. Most of their buisness is from Bantus that live here, there has to be atleast a hundred of them here. My mom went back to the paki guy she use to go to before, Anwar very nice guy. The only thing good about the Somali place is that they cut up the muqmad for you. Other than that, they're useless. I love it when Somalis think you owe them to shop with them. They seem to not understand it's all about service, just because you happen to be Somali doesn't mean you won't have competition. Don't get me wrong tho, if there was a decent Somali place we'd go.

Oh and how could I forget about the one sad so called Somali restaurant here. It's in the worst part of town, called "Moms Buffet"...Lol. They make cuntada dhagaxiinta, man. But the first day it opened was last Eid and it was really nice of them to invite all of the Somalis in the city for lunch. I don't go there but I here from my brothers that they went a cpl of times and there was noooo Somali food. The closest thing to Somali food is a Yemeni restaurant that is like 1hr and a half away. Thank God for my mama!!!

I don't like to grocery shop it's tedious, but when I do I buy it for the short term usually (basically we run out of something), and I don't spend alot. Sometimes I like to bring out one of my dust collecting cook books and try out new recipes, then you might see me seriously shoping for food items in all kinds of ailes.

Hannah, do you guys have a restuarant called Mangolian Grill, where you pick out all your ingredients and take it to the chef and he will cook it infront of you? Man everytime we go there, my food turns out Somali food..the meats I choose, the oils, the spices..every time it's funny!

Grocery shopping is one of my least tasks to do, Nevertheless it has to be done, Mostly we stop by convenient stores just to pick minor products that come to an end. And as for Somali and their never increasing weight uneven, Is due to high metabolism.
