So let' s talk and educate eachother about our different customs/traditions. This is a chance where our older members can contribute their outstanding knowlegde about the different traditions most somalis practise and hold very close to their hearts!. Ofcourse we are all helahty individuals who have a brain of our own to think with. Therefore there might be certain customs you don' t neccessarily agree with. With most of us being in the diaspora one can be influenced by one' s immediate environment which can change our views on how certain issues are dealt with according to our traditional ethics and rules Smile

this is a list of somali traditions

the bad.
1.gossiping constantly about othe tribes.
2.starting warfare with other tribes
3.teaching children to hate other tribes
4.not following the Islamic sharia
5.making sure 'the' war never ends
6.hating other tribes
7.killing persons from other tribes
8.overall doing any bad and horrible to each other.

what the hell are you talking about YAYA.... what do you mean somalis lost their culture!!.. who the hell are you to decide that!!!... Somalis didnot and will not lose their culture.. we preserve our culture very much to every extend... I have been to Minneapolis where the most somalis are concentrated and believe the somali culture and vibe is alive and kicking!!!!.. and I got some family relative in Europe and they told me that, apart from a small group of somalis such as Ayaan Hersi, Somali culture is kept alive everywhere in europe......

man we are somalis and our culture is our identity!!!..

Homer- I feel you dawg!...I am not from a real somali family....But to even be surrounded by somali makes me previldged- let alone know the somali culture. I see some people in the forum who have the ability to write and read somali without any problems...Know its culture and avoid it like it aint theirs!! Makes my blood boil dude!

I think we have 2 extreem' s here. One poster being very negative and another being overtly optimistic. To tell you the truth Homer most somalis in the diaspora are loosing their heritage. You will see 15/16 year olds who can' t speak their own language let alone have any knowlegde about their culture. However parents have found a way about that and implement a "Dhaqan celis" trip Laughing

This isn' t debate on wether somalis are loosing their culture or not. This thread was meant for educational purposes which could turn out to be interesting!

That is not a list of "traditions".. its just a list of bad traits that are shared by majority of man-kind I dont know where the hell you are going with that offensive bullshit yareey.

but anywayz, i am not surrounded by ugly Somalis, i am surrounded by good and educated somalia, but I know the "real Somalia", and i wont sugar code it. like some somalis do.

Somalia is horrible place, and it will be like that, untill they get we get our acts together, AND QUIT HATING AND KILLING EACH OTHER.

One tradition I find very unfair is that the younger sister has to remain unmarried until her older sisters have gotten a husband of their own. I knew this family in Holland who had 3 daughters and this man came and asked for the hand of the youngest one. The family replied either you take the older one or leave Laughing

Caano shuub- A practice to install the new ugaas, islan etc its practiced I think by alomst al somali clan, were they pore caano on the heads of the new tribal chief.

Dhaqan celis- new phenomenon were parents in the diaspora send there kids back to gain there culture language etc.

Cultural dances- each somali region has dances which are restricted to that culturalgeographic region.

ETC ETC I have no time and am killin time for exams too come up Crying or Very sad

other than all the bad, things.

I think the best things in our culture, is our clothing, the hido iyo dhaqan clothing for girls, uh, i think they are so pretty.

I also Love the Shaash Saar or Todobada, u know the celebration after the seven days of marraige for a girl. its weird, but its tradition. its so afrocentric, thats what i love about it.

one thing is for sho!!.. Somali culture is alive and kicking!!!.. I dont care if someone from Holland gave their daughter to an older guy or not!!!. or a kid of 16 or 17 going out with his white gurlfriend or is unable to speak the language-- they are very few.. I have been all over America and met alotta somalis who were born here.. trust me they speak better somali than I do, they know about Ahmed Gurey better than I do and they eat with their mouth shut unlike you Gacaliso and the lady who initiated this thread!!!... so go back to the holes you crawled out and the Jamaican boyfriends that screw you... and stop lying about the somali culture!!!!...
did you know that the American government has allocated more than $800.000 for somali educational purposes?.. did you know that and its more than welcome.. that is how important our culture is to the somalis in diaspora!!!..... .just shut the f!uck up, you ignorant women
