Did you know how it used to start? The opening was like this and I am not kidding you " Halkani waa radio Kudu codkii biciidka(jingle) Imikana wa wararkii oo duuduuban " sow maanta qolo ciidagale ah iyo qolo arab ihi halkaa balgubadle dhinaciisa goor duhurkii ah iskumey hallelin...kow! waxaa meeshaa ka dhacay oo kale! (jingle) haddana waa warkii oo kal fidsan
Markabaka firigaydhka ah ee yidhaa HMS Somaliland ayaa soo hogan doona bishan February marsada Berbera iyadoo uu captain u yahay Captain Ismiidh iyo chief hinjidheer Clarke
But the fun aside this radio station and the men who built it and manned it deserve statues and recognition far more than your murderous evil uncle Mr. Abdille Hassan.
Every modern Somali art form broadcast today anywhere in the whole universe of the camelfocking race was pioneered here. Every major innovative playwright; every unforgetbale singer; every patriotic diva went through here. In fact it is probably easier to name those Somali musicians and singers and playwrights that were not part of the Hargeisa set nurtured by this radio station.
Lets try Careys Ciise(magnifecently unique)
Qasim Hilowle and Fadumo Qassim and asha Cabdo(I am sorry Benadiris but Khadija Jijicola, macaanow Jeegaxiir etc were local acts not national institutions)
Think Somali creativity with the word and performing arts and think Hargeisa and that radio: Balwo, Hees, Riwaayad, Raaxeeye, magool, Baxsan, Xasan Sh Mumim, Kariye, Hiba Nuura, Belayo Cas, walaalo hargeisa, Dacar, Gaaceyte, Gujis, Qarshe, Abdi Muxumed Amin, Mooge, Sugulle. Even that paedophile piece of cagdheer scum Sangub was given his firts break here.
As you could see these are not `iidoor' only artists they are from thefour corners of theSomali plateau. So everytime you hear `a muujiyee Jaceylka' or laugh at `Shabeel Naagood' or marvel at `Xeedhyaha ha madhinina' or gasp at `Waabaa Beryay'..or your patriotic hairs stand with rendition of `Soomaaliyeey Tooso' ...think of that radio.
But they killed it well before the bombing of 88. that was merely the coup de grace. It was stripped of its best talent drom the 60s onwards and its archives were transported wholesale to mogadishu in 1970. Its hours were reduced to almost nothing. By the time it sang "tani waa hargeysoo hirarka gaaban idinkala hadleysee habeen wanaagsan" in 1988 it was already a corpse.
Admittedly part of this was typical african attitude of concenterating everything in the capital. But there is absolutely no doubt in my mind it was also a Darrood illwind towards the Isaq power bases which they always resented. Once they had political power they clamped down and made every effort to weaken the Iidoors. Dismantling hargeisa was part of that process.
As a result we all lost. Ironically such is the power of this now defuunct place that even the current Somaliland govt from egal to Riyale is trying to suffocate this place so that it does not unleash a tsunami of creative genius that wipes them off the political stage. They are smothering it when it is already dead. Just to make sure.

That was hillarious. I have to agree with you that Hargeisa was the cradle of the Somali art and every prominent artist that counts is a graduate of that institution, regardless of their qabiil affiliation. I heard Omar Dhuulle used to act a woman's role in dramas because of his soprano voice? I am not sure.
Relocating everything of value to the capital was/is a third world phenomenon and if I may stretch the truth a little, it had nothing to do with Iidoorness but rather, would have been the same had another qabiil populated Hargeisa, but I still blame the Faqash for that.
Banadiri artistry, is a world of it's own, cause the Faro Dheer doesn't share the same kind tradition, culture, hence can not relate to the richness of their poetry and what it is based. One is composing about Camel, Fauna, the grace of the wilderbeast, the long neck of the giraffe, the fight between two subclans while the other composes about Jewelry, Jiimbaar, the Aliindi clad women strolling on the beach and the reluctant father to give his daughter's hand to the vagabond who is courting her, the two communities don't see it from the same perspective.
For example, according to my opinion as a Faro Dheer, I would say, only Iidoor, Dhulos and Cagdheer can compose what could genuinely pass as poem, whereas a dude from Caliyaale would refute and claim that only Abgaal shirib counts and a resident of Aw Aweeska would brush the two of us aside and say, who wants to hear about Camels in this age and time, so you see, it's how/where you look at it
