I won't see the movie, but I think Indiana Jones was more exiciting.

If you passed the first chapters, then, you already found out the central theme of the book. The New Testament is a hoax, because Prophet Jesus pbuh was married to Marry Magdeline and left offsprings who to this day live in France. Then you realized the book's theme as an anti-new testament, that argues inorder to prove this, there exists 2000+ years old documents that proves Isse pbuh was a human like all of us, and a Prophet fo God and not infallible. Then, you have the different players and plots. To cut a long story short, the villain is unexpected (in my understanding, has a different agenda to destroy the Catholic church), he was the one who duped and defeated Opus Dei, and yes, Sophie is a descendent of the marriage between Mary Magdeline and Jesus pbuh. Did those documents saw the light of the day? I hope that will be asnwered in the sequel.

Right on Mowhawk.
The science channel played a documntry on the hidden mysteries of Jesus, and this book was mentioned. It is partially based off of a non-fiction book published in 1982, called Holy Blood, Holy Grail. This book also supports the theory that Jesus and Mary Magdelaine were married and had offspring. They traced Mary Magdalene to somewhere in France - and I don't remember the spelling on this name exact Megdolivain? something like that - is the bloodline that book traced back to Jesus and Mary. There is something about a treasure too - i haven't read DiVinci Code yet - so maybe if you have it references a treasure -- so the Church is not too keen on this, because it gets people to start questioning basic premises of their faith.
