RAINMAKING SOMALI STYLE

One of the most searing memories I hold of Somalia is the sight of little children doing the Roobdoon. Kids as young as five carry wooden tablets with verses from the Quran scribbled on them on their heads and cahnt either Quranic verses they do not understand or Somali songs beseeching the Gods for a drink of water. the children who are made to go barefoot during the midday sun go through this gruelling parade for about three hours. this is usually followed by a prayer for rain by the adults, men only of course, god will yawn if a bunch of women bothered him for water. I don't blame him with their whiny, nagging voice do you?

Garriye in his fiery days was ashamed and horrified by what he saw:

As a young child I had to participate a roobdoon (itaaqfurow) procession along Mogadishu coast.
Our prayers were accepted. Or was it a fortuitous?

It's a good thing that the Metropolitan police is appologising to the the two brother whose house was raided,one was shot and they were detained about 2weeks,and when they have done all their investigation and search they couldn't find anything,but they have isseued an appology today and now they are entitled to claim for a compensation about £5000.

Did you do it the same as described or was there variations?

What is interesting is how God almost immmediately responds and teh rains folow the rainmaking which reinforces the belief that god likes a bit of begging by starving thirsty kids befor bestowing his mercies. But of course some will say, istaqfurullah subhanallah, the roobdoons happen usually very near the time the rains would have come anyway.

That Roobdoon incantation sounds pre-Islamic but then I'm hopelessly ignorant of all things pertaining to Somali history/culture. So I humbly sit back and wait for informed contribution from Kambuli et al.
