The pettiness is due to lack cultural of confidence. There is deep-seated teror of being taken over, defeated somehow culturally, overwhlemed because they realise they are an inferior, weaker culture.

When Muslims(at least Arab Muslims) were on the up and powerful and knocking on the gates of Europe they tolerated everything from new ideas to wine drinking to arts to homosexulaity. Human cultures are in many ways just like human individuals: only those who feel big enough with broad enough shoulders can afford haughty tolerance of petty little things.

Now they are terrified of winne the Pooh. Quite sad actually.
