Why do they have black photos on the walls of Uni LIbraries?

I was wondering why do they have such photos on the walls of University libraries. Photos like Amiri Baraka and Rita Dove captures your sight. a rectangular shape board hangs next to every photo containing a synopsis of their history, talents like if they were poets , artists or prolific writers.

What is the Aim of having them on the walls. I enquired one of the libraries and he told me that they are to discourage others from having wrong perceptions about oppressed groups or they stand role models for black students.
