Mohammed Abdulle Hasssan. Why he hated "Somali"

The Mullah always used terms such as "Dervishes" and "Moslems" . He hated using Somali. He also prohibited his members to regard themselves Somalis or anything related to their tribes.

He regarded "Somalis" as his enemies and used it in many of his letters disparagingly. In 1908, he wrote to the British authorities complaining about the harrasment of Somalis.

Hawa beena Soomalidaa, hadafka raacdaa leh
Hadal ruma Daraawiishta iyo,weli hanoonaa leh

He wrote to the British authorities,

"I beg to inform you that I am in peace with the British Government, and I shall never attempt to tell you lies. All that I mentioned to you in my letters is true, but most of the people who talk to you about me are telling lies, and you must know that ALL SOMALIS ARE TALKING AND DEALING AGAINST ME , and no doubt always they tell you that the Dervishes have done so and so................Although I have been treated as stated above by the Somalis, yet i am considered by them and called a BAD MAN, such as "old singer," "Killer' "Looter" "disturber of peace" "thief"........ My request from you now is for "aman'[truce] and peace, and I also request you to put out your hand and make peace between me and the Somalis.""

I didn't ask you whether he was a hero or not? Why he hated "Somali" He despised to call himself a Somali but "Dervishes".

I presented you evidence. Btw, Dervishes were recruited from every possible clan.

galia, if there are savages it is your ilk, you idiot. Let me repeat, MOhammed Abdulle hassan hated "Somalis" and he never regarded himself a Somali. You show me where he called himself a Somali? He never did but a "Dervish", an imported term from the Mahdi movement. If he would have won with his Dervish state, there would have been no Somali name. NO SUCH NAMED WOULD EVER NEVER HAVE EXISTED.

Was he the one that used to chop off the heads of the leaders of his rival clans/tribes? I was sleepy when I was being told that story.

Crazysommies, I think this is something that writers and historians never paid attention to except a few. Was it because that "Somali" was never used in terms of national identity? We weren't state yet and Mohammed wanted to establish a new state with a title like Dervishes.

Gladiator calling himself "dervishes" had nothing to do him denying he was somali.Dervish means a Muslim believer who has taken vows of poverty and a life of austerity in the service of God.

must have been created or changed later on to include "Somali". But people who knew this guy recorded him to have never used the word "Somali".

Interestingly, he had no problems using the names of tribal groups. Very habashi political system where they deny recognision to Somaliland, Somalia and at the same time build a TNG based upon 4.5.

dangirl, I understand your point that calling or identifying himself as a Dervish was due to his religious movement of Saalixiya conversion. He, however, as you can see from his letters and poems despised the word Somali . For us generations of today, Somali is a sacred word and we fight for it.

Niya, He did hate Somali name.

You right he had no problems using the names of tribes. I think that has to do with his financial appeal to clans when he wanted army and support. He was intriguingly foxy to look and appeal to his needs from the very bottom of Qabiil, instead of Somali in general. For instance, he never appealed for the general support of Somalis.
