This is always an infected debate. Every somali has an opinion about the causes of the revolution as well as how it progressed. The majority of somalis loved the kacaan until the late 1970s when it lost its marxist compass. The reasons could be debated.

I think it is important to distinguish between the kacaan and its leaders.

Indeed, some could argue that the seeds of our problems today were sawn in 1969 when a democratically elected government was overthrown albeit in a bloodless coup. Others could also argue that the kacaan took place because of widespread tribalism and corruption. And that the kacaan (at least for a decade or so) formed our identity as a strong nation. It built institutions, it gave as a written language and that we became feared as a great nation. As a matter of fact, many of the artefacts of the "kacaan" (everything from governance to institutions) are potent. Many people in Somalia view the kacaan times with nostalgia.

It punishment against Majerteen civilians were carried out by a Isaaq general without the consent of Siyaad Barre for the sole intention to retaliate against the treason of Abdullahi Yusuf whom massacred innocent people in Balanbale and Galdogob whilst bringing Ethiopian troops into their country. And that Isaaq general was punished for his action by the government.
