This topic only confirmed my long held suspicions about the Somali psyche. Which has always been short-sighted, living for the moment, devoid of any sense of national pride or dignity, and lacking major in the cognitive sense. We have individuals settling for shitty buildings in the middle of dessert and hailing such mediocracy as being better than national soveigrnity and cohesiveness. Why? Because their insignificant little clans have managed to turn cow dung in to shitholes. Yes, a shithole. Somalia is today a shithole and your pathetic little clan enclaves are part of this little shithole. Feeding off of the suffering of Somalis in the South as though you are any better, you are not. Clan driven neanderthals who never saw a peaceful & progressive Somalia. A product of clan brain-washing and living on the sidelines, wasting away in the diaspora. What does any of you know about Somalia? Stick to your clan mediocracy. Damn simpletons.
And the audacity of some to repeatedly say "the past belongs in the past", while talking shit about their retarded ancestors and who grazed what with which camel a 100 years ago, in the middle of a barren wasteland. Who gives a fuck? Fuck your clans and your lack of national pride. Do something constructive and return to your little clan holes, do something constructive for your in-bred relatives. Don't tell us shit about the past belonging in the past and Somalia somehow being better off today, because a brain-dead relative of yours is building some unsupervised buildings in the middle of a pile of dung.
Thank you.

This is a classic example of Calaacal at it's best. The fact is somalia witnessed a brutal civil war and it is still ongoing in the capital and surrounding areas. Some people decided to take matters into their own hands and build from scratch and whether you regard that progress as "brain-dead relative of yours building unsupervised buildings in the middle of a pile of dung" it doesn't improve mogadishu's situation.
The thing here is you miss the 'good ol days' living a life of luxury in the capital and surrounding farmlands, but you have absolutely no clue of the rest of the country. The citizens you refer to as 'brain dead' were still jobless and poor as they are today, although the signs of change are encouraging.
The truth is the country was only really the capital, including surrounding towns, and other southern cities. The rest of the country (PL&SL) were merely backwaters, with the exception of Berbera's port and airstrip. Furthermore, you could further argue that SL & PL citizens live far more freely than under the previous regime, where freedom of speech was denied and totalitarianism and nepotism were rampant.

Economic policies
As part of Barre's socialist policies, major industries and farms were nationalized, including banks, insurance companies and oil distribution farms.
By the mid- to late-1970s, public discontent with the Barre regime was increasing, largely due to corruption among government officials as well as poor economic performance. The Ogaden War had also weakened the Somali army substantially and military spending had crippled the economy. Foreign debt increased faster than export earnings, and by the end of the decade, Somalia's debt of 4 billion shillings equalled the earnings from seventy-five years' worth of banana exports.
By 1978, manufactured goods exports were almost non-existent, and with the lost support of the Soviet Union the Barre government signed a structural adjustment agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the early 1980s. This included the abolishment of some government monopolies and increased public investment. This and a second agreement were both cancelled by the mid-1980s as the Somali army refused to accept a proposed 60 percent cut in military spending. New agreements were made with the Paris Club, the International Development Association and the IMF during the second half of the 1980s. This ultimately failed to improve the economy which deteriorated rapidly in 1989 and 1990, and resulted in nationwide commodity shortages.

"When I came to Mogadishu...[t]here was one road built by the Italians. If you try to force me to stand down, I will leave the city as I found it. I came to power with a gun; only the gun can make me go."[22]
"I did not come to power to divide Somali but to unite them, and I will never deviate from this path. I shall respect a Somali individual as long as he deserves respect, but if he turns away from the correct path, then that is not my business."[

Two concepts that clash with the teachings of Islam. I'm glad I have had nothing to do with each.national pride

Life is about choices. I cannot speak for Somalia Proper, but for Somaliland the 1988-1991 war of liberation was worth it.
There is no price on freedom & liberty. Roads & infrastructure can always be built. Life is about values. It is sad some value concrete more than the human will to be free.
