MOGADISHU - At least 61 people have been killed in central Somalia and the capital Mogadishu in fighting between rival clan militias in the past week, Somalia sources and militia officials said on Saturday.

Most of the fighting took place in central Somalia between supporters of General Mohamed Farah Aideed's Habre Gedir clan and those of the Marehan clan of the Somali National Front (SNF) of late dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

"Inter-clan skirmishes have risen in the three weeks since supporters of Aideed proclaimed him president of the whole of Somalia," Guled Tarabi told reporters. "It is because people are a little more uncertain of political trends."

A spokesman for Aideed's Somali National Alliance (SNA) said that before the fighting broke out, mostly in Aideed-supporting villages in Galgadud, SNF militia had raided the area and killed 23 people to punish them for apparently backing the wrong group.

Tarabi denied that, saying SNF militia were not involved in any massacre of innocent people.

The USC did not fight Darood they were only fighting the Govt. by hitting and running what was left of the SNA and Koofi Gaduud and killing civilians on the roadways.........and most Darood didn't even think they were being targeted and they were neutral which is why the USC turned it into a barbarious civilian killing thing and that is when Darood even got the idea it was Qabiil-based. Everybody thought the USC was just another political jabhad not drug-based junkie mooryaan.

USC would have not even made it through Hiiraan if it weren't for all the SNA stationed in WAqooyiga.

Other than low-level rebel shoot 'n run tactics, Xamar was not fought in and the USC came in when it was evacuated. The first fighting w/ what was left of the SNA happened in Mudug/Galgaduud. That's why when Cabdiaziz Cali Barre came down from Waqooyiga the USC was cleaned out in Galkacyo and Caydiid came back to Xamar to shell the Abgaal, starve the Eelaay, and rob the Murursade.

The USC ceased to function as a coherent military group when they were dismantled in Gedo by none other than Barre Hiiraale among others.

The Ceyr military commander of the USC was killed there and thousands of USC were slaughtered..........and that is the first time you guys saw a real battle of USC without the entire Southern coalition of Raxanweyn, Hawiye, Ogaden.

its true that first face of the war it was USC vs goverment but the war changed after siyad bare were chassed away from mogadishu. daroods started killing hawiye in kismaayo marka shalabood bay bakool and other places and hawiye retaliated back.
