Lots of things like this in Africa. The Somali in general were expanding in the 18th and 19th centuries. In west africa a similar people to the Somali in terms of lifestyle were also expanding, the Fulani conquered half of West Africa during their Fulani Jihad. The Zulus in the south were expanding too, and the Habesha were expanding south, east and west.
If the Scramble for Africa had not happened, the Fulani would have conquered the whole Sahel, the Habesha would have taken over Sudan, and the Somali would have conquered their way down to Dar es Salaam, where they would have run into the Zulu coming north from the other direction.
