If you consider the (mostly) secular leadership of Pakistan and India fighting over Kashmiri real estate symptomatic of some war between Hindu's and Muslims, sure. Let's forget the deeply unpopular division pushed through by the British, based on the rift between the Indian National Congress and the All India Muslim League (I think).

I don't think that's a really fair evaluation of the historical reality. The British were inclined to leave the state intact, but it was actually the Hindu and Muslim political leaders that exerted enormous pressure to split the state. And it's not surprising, given the issues involved, why. Hindus and Muslims both have religious systems which dictate their societal structures, make it very difficult for them to come to terms with each other.

The British just wanted out. Gandhi wanted a single state, but was willing to accept two autonomous areas within one state. Mohammed Ali Jinnah insisted on a separate muslim state because he feared that the Muslims, who were outnumbered, would be dominated in a single state. Gandhi was assasinated by a radical Hindu who felt he was too pro-Muslim......

Millions died during the partition. Here is the prelude and the postlude. Reminds me a lot of events in Palestine.

They are both estimates. Nobody really knows how many. A great many people died.
