I was reading this article about the Maldives published in The Economist awhile back. It was talking about the concern about safety for visitors in resorts. Apprently,there are increasing number of Islamic rebel groups who are coming into the resorts that serve alcohol and getting rid of them by force offcourse. The gov't is also enforcing women to wear head cover at work. As far as I'm concerned I dont see a reason to be concerned for safety; the people of the Maldives are Muslims.
