Folks,

Religion is important. You can pray anywhere but if you get severely ill where will you get treated ? If your wife has a complicated pregnancy, where will she sick treatment ? If your 5 yr old dies from thirst or cholera caused by lack of clean water ?

I have seen people spend $100,000 to build a Masjid in a place that doesn't have any clean water for the people to drink. Worse, there is no clinic for the next 200km.

abdiwahaab, what do u base on your question? statistics? have massive mosques been built in record numbers in wartorn southern Somalia? does every xaafad in Mogadishu has 5 or even 10 massive mosques? dude, why come up with fairy tales?

The worst is after somalis spend millions buidling a mosque they name it after some Arab dude, unless the Masaajid name is so Ibnu so and So it aint a proper Masjid..

You are mixing things up. In the West a Mosque is seen as a place for prayers and worship alone. While the concept of Masjid is far more multifunctional. When the Muslims were advanced and dominated the world in most fields, a masjid functioned as: hospital, school, place of worship, gathering place for all kinds of activites be it political, social, intellectual , meetingpoint, etc etc.

So the building of a Masjid in a Somali town is the first step of development since after the completion, running water, hospital, schools etc all will follow or are already integrated.

He could have very well said "Why do Somalis build a hotel". I always see and hear couple Masjids one story high, but the real embarrassing competition SOmalis engage in is what they called Hotels and other stuff or the Somalis who work all that money and instead of funding hospitals build unoccupied "houses" without water, sewage, etc and this guy had the nerves to go after MASJIDS, which do not only serve as houses of worship but as well as free place for the homeless, community meeting points, where kaalmo and aid is raised for the needy, where kids are housed from gang culture, and where people's spirits and moral is helped in a place such as a Somalia.

Voltage, Somaliweyn and others made good points. The purpose of a Masjid far superceedes our Western interpetation of what a Masjid should be.

Masjids are not places were people get treated for illness nor places where people get water to drink. Hospitals and wells are more critical than building a flamboyant mosque.
