Let the man rest in peace guys. I am sure, no matter what he did in the last years of his glorious years, a lot of Somalis are weeping crocodile tears and remarkably, most of these people are the same people that chased him away two decades ago

"Although used to clan rivalry, border disputes, drought, and occasional famine. By the mid-1970s the Somali Democratic Republic seemed close to conquering them all. Under its authoritative President, Siad Barre; the country appeared to have wealth, progressive infrastructure, adequate food, and a high standard of education and medication."

You are defending Siad Barre, but a Mareehan kid brings up unsubstantiated allegation of Abdilahi Yusuf about a concocted gaffe he made from the Cayr-owned Horn-Afrik

An age-old tribute called Siraadka Afrika composed by the late Gadabursi playwrighter, Xasan Sheikh Muumin,

Siraadka Afrika laabtiisu saxar madow lahayn
Siyaad, aabaha soomalida cusub soo jeede foojigan

Siyaad, sadkiisa lama cunee sir ma qabe dadaal badan
libtiisa lama sidkee sareedo iyo guul barwaaqo
loo siman yahay sacaado noogama horreyn

Siyaad, sidaan u qaadannay tawraddaan ku dhaadanay
sifaalahaan u soo marnay sama doqontii seexataa

seceedu dibi dhalaa
negaade suubanow salguri baan dhisnee
sareedo noogama horreyn loo siman yahay

Siyaad, saacado noogama horreyn

Siyaad, sidaan u qaadannay hanti wadaagga nolosha noo simay
silic iyo saboolba waan sagootinnay
tallaabadii Siyaad sokeeye iyo nacab
siyaasad huftan buu dunida kula socdaa
sareeda iyo guulbarwaaqo loo siman yahay
sacaado noogama horreyn, Siyaad

We should always be objective when it comes to history, especialy the history of Somalia from which we should draw lessons.

As for Siad Barre, his regime destroyed the very fabric of Somalia. To understand how I derived at this point you should read the analysis of the various periods in Somalia in this topic:

In that topica preview:

Conclusion:

Siad Barre stole the ruling seat by proclaiming that he would eradicate evil things like clannism, nepotism, corruption and would restore a sense of confidence in national will and a minimum basis for national cooperation. In the first years of his rule he came with PR-stunts which secured him popular support. But as soon as the economic windfalls generated by the previous civilian government ended after 1974, Siad Barre had to secure his wide support and launched a premature invasion of Ethiopia to gain the Ogaden region, this turned disastrous despite the courageous effort of Somali soldiers. After the 77 war things went really bad, economy was bankrubt, self-reliance policy abandoned in favour of IMF-ism, clannism, nepotism and corruption surfaced back.

See further in that topic.
